Now I am not normally one to start a thread, but in this time of doom and gloom I feel it is much needed. I'm guessing and probably rightly so that it has been done before many a time but to heck with it. Watching Stoke over the years has had many highs and many lows but there is nothing like a player who can get you off the edge of your seat, or that defender who will put his soul on the line for our club is there? So just asking for your top five Stoke city heroes and obviously age and opinion will determine your choices but here's my five in no particular order. 1. Steino. The first name that comes to mind as although I was a young lad when he was banging them in, he smashed the winner in at my first wembley visit. 2. Shawcross. In my opinion club legend and was pivotal in our promotion season and stay in the top flight. 3. Thorne. Growing up watching us fight in the lower leagues was tough but you always knew Thorney would score if it dropped in the box. 4. Hoekstra. Perhaps unlikely inclusion for some of the older posters but it may be rose tinted but he was magic on the ball and got me on the edge of the seat everytime he brought the ball down from wherever it was headed. 5. Tough one this as there have been the likes of Arnie etc. But this for me is Ricardo Fuller for his sheer do nothing for eighty to eighty five minutes but when he wanted to take five players on and score the winner he did it, and the goal against Villa will remain my favourite unless someone comes along and tops it(not likely) Hope the thread brings back some happy memories folks we need some lifting at the minute!

Holding on for a hero!
Alan Hudson.
King of the Kings Road and good enough to look apparently bored by the mediocrity around him.
Only Stoke player I ever wanted to be, I reckon that's a good test for a hero.

Only Stoke player I ever wanted to be, I reckon that's a good test for a hero. Your comment about Hudson being good enough to look apparently bored at the mediocrity around him strikes a chord with my memories of him. I can’t remember who we were playing, but does anyone remember him cruising around the centre circle, with no one able to get near him to take the ball off him, and then still controlling the ball at pace, he started flapping his arms just as though he was soaring above the pitch like an albatross. I glanced up at the player’s and families box to the left of the Boothen and saw John Mahoney and many others in there, doubled up with laughter. A massively talented player. If only we could see entertainment like that now from our current midfield maestro - Nick Powell! If only.....

Many great heroes mentioned above but for me there is only one Mr Stoke City - Smiffy, who would die for his beloved club. Literally!

In no particular order and all from the era when I was growing up:
Bluto Jimmy Greenhoff Jackie Marsh
Eric Skeels Denis Smith
Largely one-club men and I liked a tough 'un. Sir Jimmy for the class to round it off up front.

I’m with you OP, thought the only one change I would make is Sheron for Fuller. It was close between the two for me but I went for Fuller probably because we had more success with him up front 👍

He would stop dead and put his foot on the ball and point to where he wanted a team mate to run, as he did so everyone froze in suspended animation! I'm talking the first coming of Alan Hudson, top flight opposition, Liverpool and Arsenal, the great and the good of English football made to look a little bit silly!

When Bill Shankly knocks on the away team door and comes in to shake your hand with the comment “that was one of the finest individual performances I’ve ever seen” ... you know you are talking someone very very special.

Wayne Biggins My first and only Stoke "hero". Loved that bloke. Bertie saved my lads life (sort of). Outside the old ground we stopped the tanned one for an autograph and he was alert enough to stop the boy walking out in front of a truck...I think we were a bit star struck and had forgotten all 3 of us were standing in the road

In chronological rather than rank order:
1) Beagrie - the jinking and somersaults too seductive for a ten year-old to resist 2) Steino - goals goals goals goals goals goals punch Jim Gannon for being a daft racist goals goals goals 3) SJE - bit left-field for some maybe but I bloody loved him. Such a tidy and complete midfielder when on form 4) Ryan - shame things are going to fade out with a bit of a whimper but he'll be remembered as a solid gold legend 5) Bojan - players of his talent really should not end up anywhere near Stoke, but he came and embraced it, played with freedom and filled us with joy, albeit far too briefly

I do think we ultimately made the right choice bringing in Whelan though as history probably proves.

I can even have the honour of saying I was a member of the Peter Beagrie fan club! Happy Days! Talking of wingers, Hoekstra deserves a credible mention too..

1st hero was Denis Smith, for the reason of he was the 1st player autograph I got as a 7 year old outside a cold & dank Victoria Ground many moons ago
During the 80s, 'Judder' Berry...Must have been for those ocassions he would give the Boothen a fist & 'come on' to encourage the noise to crank up a notch
The 90s....Steino. Simple!
And into the glorious 21st Century, Abdoulaye Faye & Robert Huth for being the no nonsense brick shit houses they were, and sadly showing the majority of the spineless 'team' we have today what it meant to wear a red & white striped shirt
