Dashcams, etc. Just wondering about people's views on these.
Saw a prog on ITV on Thursday (3/10, duration c. 45 minutes) at 10.45pm called 'Car Crash Britain: Caught On Camera' - it was marked as a a repeat. Never seen it before - looked for a TV catch-up link to post & all I can find is a link on YouTube showing the whole prog & indicating that it was first shown 2-3 years ago.
Anyway….. loads of footage showed how valuable dashcams & helmet cams have been in showing responsibility for error in crash situations - couldn't help yelling out every minute or so depending on the severity of the prangs, many involving pedestrians who were very lucky to escape serious injury.
Was wondering if anyone on the Oatie has had experience of a dashcam proving invaluable or has an opinion either way on them. Should all cars be fitted with them as a standard feature?

Fuck em off I say. Every body who has a dash cam has either been involved in an accident or recorded one.
The roads are much safer without them.
Go on youtube and search dashcam footage. They make accidents happen.
I don't have one and drive a car, pickup truck and motor bike regularly. Bet you to a pound of pinch of shit, if I put one on either vehicle I'd be up A&E in an hour. Stay safe people.

I've got one. Very useful to have, particularly for how cheap they are.
Although can't help thinking if you watched it back it would be mostly filled with stuff like this.

I got caught on a dashcam in an admittedly careless but minor incident recently since I passed my test.
Was in two minds about whether I could overtake a cyclist before a left turn. Thought I had the time but misjudged and while I didn't hit him I cut him up a bit. I hold my hands up but no harm done, or so I thought.
Reported to police and letter of intended prosecution through over the next two weeks with dashcam footage.
While it doesn't excuse me, I did have P plates on so thought they would use a bit of common sense.
Nobody should act as police, only the police.

They’re used mainly by busybodies who curse everyone out on the roads whilst simultaneously being completely fucking wank behind the wheel.

Rubbish, I have one purely for my own protection, have passed my advanced driving and accident free since 1974 apart from two that have driven into me! Totally agree. We have one purely for our protection. Last August we'd stopped, waiting on a car park for a parking space to become available. Some idiot in a BMW decides to reverse out of his space at some speed, so we sounded the horn several times but he continued reversing before we could move and reversed straight into the front of our car. He got out, apologised, checked the damage - his bumper was cracked, and some slight bodywork damage, and our car had a badly cracked bumper and a smashed headlight. He apologised again, admitted it was his fault, offered us £300 cash to cover the repairs (yeah right !). Turns out it was a hire car as his own car was being repaired after a recent accident ! We refused, exchanged insurance details, took photos of the damage, location etc and went home to contact our insurance. To cut a long story short he told his insurers we'd driven into him and said we'd admitted it was our fault. However the whole thing was swiftly sorted as soon as we provided the dashcam footage. Without it we'd have been struggling to convince the insurers - as there were no witnesses.

Had one installed after two occasions of having the car hit while it was parked and the perpetrators leaving no details. The motion sensor kicks in and starts recording. It was a damned sight cheaper than forking out for repairs and resprays. There are some ignorant cunts out there but hopefully there won't be a next time. As for the wanker in the Sainsbury's car park who reversed into me while I was stationary let's just say that he got lucky. Marvellous things.

I had this bad boy fly out in front of me last year in deepest darkest Welsh Wales. Fortunately for it, my razor sharp reactions avoided a nasty collision and it lived to fly anothey day. I got a good picture from the dashcam footage though Click image for bigger view. Attachment Deleted

'Car Crash Britain: Caught On Camera' I have one and was driving along the promenade(Dual carriageway) by the pier in Southport approaching a set of lights with pedestrian crossing and filter lane to turn left for Lord St.which was on green with right hand lane on red (through traffic)there was traffic stopped in right hand lane so i slowed down anticipating pedestrians crossing from my right ignoring the fact their light was on RED i am glad i did as a whole family stepped right in front of me without dash-cam who knows what would have been the outcome for be me,no real injuries just bruises but having what happened recorded proved my version of events.

Erm…….. btw, just to clarify, that last bunch of comments about Southport was Skem's, not mine, Yoky - it did one of those weird posty-things where it appeared in my original post's box instead of in a new window below it. But I'm sure you knew that!

As for GH's cyclist post, listen, he had his P Plates on, he's a new driver and his decision making isn't going to be 100% yet. He's admitted he made a mistake, but to give him a notice of prosecution? Madness.

I agree to a point but on P plates surely if in any doubt (two minds) you err on the side of caution, i ride a cycle and have had this happen to me a few times (never been hit but had to brake hard)so perhaps prosecution is the way to get the message across? May seem harsh but i respect cyclists and give them the space they require which is not hard to do. Maybe a cyclist awareness course as there will be plenty of drivers who need one?

I've tried to persuade Mr Surf to get one but he won't, which I think is a mistake as these days there are more maniacs driving than ever before and you permanently need to be looking after #1. Re. this bit, yes, EXACTLY. I must say firstly that Mr S is a fantastic driver - competent, sensible and careful. We were driving along the narrow country roads through Hartwell (? I think it's called Hartwell - it's the stretch where SoT Rugby Club is situated, between Barlaston and Rough Close) some years ago and went round one of the blind bends, only to see a car coming towards us and way over the middle of the road so that it was partly on our side. I remember automatically calling out 'oh my God, he's going to hit us' - but he swerved enough to avoid a major collision and the impact was far more minor - but still enough to have damaged our car and shaken us up quite badly (okay, especially me.) There was virtually no other traffic about and we didn't call the police - a pity, really, as the positioning of both cars in the road made it obvious who had been in the wrong - but this was also in the days before mobile phones, so out there in the countryside it would have been quite a walk to find a phone - and no-one had actually been injured apart from myself being in shock. Both drivers got out & exchanged details/insurers, etc., and the other guy admitted to being completely in the wrong - but - lo and behold, what should come through the post some days later but a letter from his insurers disputing our claim, refusing to pay for the damage and including a statement from the other driver that it had 100% been ourselves who had been on the wrong side of the road. I can't really remember how it turned out, but we did go back to the insurers to the effect that the guy was lying through his teeth and I think it ended up being treated as a 'knock-for-knock' case. As I said, Dees, your experience and ours was exactly why I raised the subject and I was wondering if many of our folks on the Oatie had experienced the same thing. I think I'll ask Mr S again about getting one.

I would've reversed & then put my foot on the floor & flattened 'em, Skem. The TV programme footage I posted actually showed how often pedestrians do carelessly step out into the road from between vehicles. Very glad the bus driver supported you.

The French system where you both exchange accounts of the accident at the scene and are recommended to carry a camera seems the best way forward to me,not as good as dash-cam though .

I'd thoroughly recommend getting a dashcam - the cost of the repairs to my wife's car was somewhere around £800-1000 which we fortunately proved wasn't our fault with the dashcam footage.

Tsk, tsk. Come off it, Snow White. You know very well that Dees and I both wore headcams for both lots of Chuff's knee replacement surgery! That's why all the YouTube footage of it is so good. Yes, I do have a chauffeur, but Crispin drives me about when Parker's got an afternoon off and I don't fancy getting the Ferrari out.
