Who ever recommended Jones must take some responsibility and the process changed, urgently, for ALL recruitment, as the last two years and four managers has been a disaster in football terms.

Jones looked a good appointment, a young ambitious manager whose team played high tempo attacking football and scored loads of goals. It looked like a welcome change from the list of usual suspects but it has all gone horribly wrong, I am not sure anyone could have seen this coming.

It looked like a welcome change from the list of usual suspects but it has all gone horribly wrong, I am not sure anyone could have seen this coming. Is this a wind up? He wasn't qualified. Simple as that. Many argued the case at the time, including myself. We may not have seen the absolute disaster he was, but given he has been record-breaking in that respect, you'll have to forgive that one. We certainly anticipated failure though. For the simple reason he had done nothing that reflected the challenge he was taking on: the league and higher standards, size of club, player dynamics, expectations, scale of turnaround, dealing with an inept board. But forget that, it transpires that Jones doesn't really have a plan - a coherent way of thinking. For him to get past them at the interview stage shows how wafer thin their knowledge must have been. And even if he had got through that net, to give him the keys beyond last season's debacle, was utter stupidity. He'd taken us backwards from Rowett. Every manager's job is a "project". Somehow that label bought him an excuse for ineptitude. Its more than just Jones though. Lambert was such a tepid appointment. Hughes stayed too long. On top of all that, the debt the club have now run up as a result of shocking procurement and due diligence is staggering. Our Board are the achilles heal. A bunch of cronies who have made money through the unsavoury business of getting desparate men into debt. They need to go if we are to move forward as a club foremost. Results on the pitch would follow.

It was a laudable gamble that didn’t pay off. I was pleased to see the club trying something different for a change. You can quibble about the timing of it and whether it was what we needed at that particular time, but for all we knew at the time we were getting another Dean Smith or Wilder. In hindsight it’s come way too soon for Jones but I can see him learning from it and coming back stronger. I hope this doesn’t put us off ever looking at up and coming managers again and reverting to every has-been dullard who happens to be available.

Jones's very brief CV has a div 2 promotion on it and some success in Div 1. The biggest assumption made by Coates Jones and many on here is that he did well at Luton which means he should do well at Stoke. Luton were and still are a small time club with no money but young enthusiastic players. Stoke at the time of his appointment were coming off the back of 10 yrs in the prem, have ex prem senior players, have mega rich owners with a huge wad of cash. The two clubs at that time were worlds apart. There were dozens of reasons when he was appointed suggesting it was a major gamble and probably likely to fail. Sadly the owners and many fans got swept along by his enthusiasm and sales pitch. Unfortunately many of the senior pros in our club sussed him quite early on.

We just didn’t need this type of manager at that point in our history. We absolutely needed the experienced hand to steady the sinking ship but that opportunity was missed amidst all the ridiculous ‘dinosaur’ nonsense. It was a bad decision pure and simple.
