Thinking of getting myself a new computer as mine is ridiculously slow and has an embarrasing 256MB of RAM which i didn't know was appauling until recently! (never really had a clue why my PC decided to have a breather if i tried to open something too fast)
So i'm to start having a look around and would like to see if anyone has any reccomendations.
I haven't got a fortune to spend and would hope to find one for about £500 if i can.
A fella' at college reckons i NEED 3GB or more of RAM nowerdays but he's a bit of a know it all so i don't know how true that is (most seem to have 2GB from the websites i've seen)
P.S. Can't decide between laptop of desktop but i will be hoping to start Uni after next year so i suppose a laptop may be more practical.
Cheers in advance guys and girls ;D

On The Gadget Show on Monday they did a bit about Desktop PC's and they said that it's best to visit your local computer shop as they can offer you what you require, rather than going to a shop like PC World and having to do with a package that they have.

Id advise to go to Dell, they have better deals than PC World etc and you get a good pc and not one that is built up from any bits and bobs these shitty little shops have got in that week on the cheap.

It's a good shop mate, i've built many a pc with components from there, can't fault them.
The spec on that samsung is superb for the money.

I've noticed i know buggery squat but i want something that won't be abysmal after a year or two and which will be able to run programs smoothly (FM, Photoshop, MSN+other apps at same time) as these all make my existing computer crawl! 2GB of RAM seems to be the way to go, no idea about hard drives although i presume over 100GB? Cache i have no idea or graphics cards or any of the rest haha.

main thing you need is core 2 duo processor- this influences the speed over 180gb hard drive dedicated graphics card 2gb ram
the rest are just bells and whistles but handy to have memory card reader bluetooth webcam hd outputs etc...

As chrispk says the main thing is the processor and a good dedicated graphics card. The rest depends on what you want to do with it ie gaming, video editing. I have been looking around some sites and have come to the conclusion that the Samsung that i linked above is, in my opinion, a cracking laptop for the money. Also there are a few good Dell ones as bread states.

Core 2 Duo is a single CPU with two cores. So is Dual Core. Generally speaking and without getting technical, a Core 2 Duo is what to go for.

You can get a higher spec Dell for £399 (Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor) probably. But for what I need it for, it does the job, looks decent and I couldnt be doing with waiting.

Thats fine as long as it does the tasks that you need it to. Best thing to do is set a budget for your requirements and stick to it as there is always going to be another one "Bigger & Better"
