I thought it was quite shallow and was overall quite disappointing. Didn’t really show anything more than the genuine footy fan already knew. I was expecting a lot more interviews and footage of the great man himself showing what an absolute humble gentleman the guy was. How this man was never knighted was an absolute disgrace !

Great tribute. Here's one for you. Can anyone remember his save at the Boothen end against Eusebio? It was in his testimonial match I think

For ITV that was depth. As you say most genuine fans knew all that anyway and probably a bit more. As a short snapshot to the people who may only of heard of his name would have got some insight into the man.

I was expecting a lot more interviews and footage of the great man himself showing what an absolute humble gentleman the guy was. How this man was never knighted was an absolute disgrace ! Perhaps if he had a conviction for assaulting his partner, Theresa May would have given him a knighthood. The first time I ever saw Stoke City live was Saturday 28th February 1970 a 2-2 draw against Manchester United. My dad took me from the depths of the Staffordshire Moorlands to the Victoria Ground in our Mini Traveller as a 9th birthday treat. As a budding goalkeeper I was infatuated with Gordon Banks. The best goalkeeper in the world by a mile. Prior to that I hadn't really supported a team and am ashamed to admit I'd flirted a bit with The Shit because they'd won the European Cup a couple of years earlier. I also remember 'watching' the World Cup as a five year old at our house with my dad and his mates crowded round a brand new but tiny black and white telly brought especially for the occasion. Although I must admit I was more interested in the cardboard box it had come in than the action on the telly box. My first trip to the Victoria Ground to sit on those wooden seats in the ill fated Butler Street Stand, which was almost scuppered by a birthday dose of mumps, may have had a bit of Best and Charlton about it but really Banks was the main event. The mumps even gave me the opportunity to wrap the red and white scarf my gran had knitted specially for me more tightly round my neck. I watched Banksie avidly and I was smitten. I can't remember any of the action apart from Stoke drew 2-2 and my 9 year old brain logically concluded that Stoke must be as good as the recent European Champions and that was that. I still think that my fledgling allegiance might have been broken early on if Stoke had sold Banksie but they didn't and here I am 49 years later. Forny you're right. The honours system in this country is a disgrace. How can an arrogant, rude, boorish wife beater be knighted when a supremely gifted, athletic, hard working World Cup winner who was voted best goalkeeper in the known Universe 6 times on the trot and was a truly gentle man who I never heard say a bad word about anyone, especially fellow footballers, in any kind of medium, who battled through incredible professional and personal problems to play again with one eye, be overlooked for so many years? Scandalous. However, what matters to me more than any gong, especially one donated by that witch May, is that I, and most right thinking people, rate Gordon Banks both professionally and personally, above the likes of Geoffrey Boycott any day of the week. So enjoy your bauble you vile little man. I know who my hero will always be. Thank you 'Sir' Gordon.

I was quite surprised that Don Mullan didn't appear. In fairness it was a fairly superficial flick through the latter part of his career. The Don Mullan story should be a programme on its own to do it any justice.

Same here mate and every time I see that penalty save in the semi final it gets better and for some reason I get emotional watching it I remember hiding behind the sofa. And I was listening on the radio I was at the game, don't know how but we were in the Irons paddock surrounded by WHU fans (segregation was not very sophisticated then), and we bought the tickets from Stoke??. We had managed to escape with some mild excitement when we scored but after Banks penalty save we went mental and got a bit of a thumping until two ladies, yes they were sort of female anyway, told them to lay off us and told us to move area which we did. Great days, and I am still convinced Harry R dived for that penalty. The tube journey afterwards was where I learnt as is still the case on the underground, not to make eye contact with anyone

Standing behind the goal net opposite end to the penalty. Great night and as you say a tricky race back to the underground after. Just watched the program back and nothing on there I hadn’t seen before so that was a little disappointing but still nice to reminisce about the great man

Lovely to watch for those of us who didn't live through them times. Felt a bit rushed though, surprised it was only half an hour long. Could easily have made it an hour and still kept it just as interesting.

I also was in the West Ham paddock that night. Just 15 at the time and I just couldn’t contain myself when Banks made that penalty save. The natives were very threatening to my Dad and I after that.
I thought the programme was shallow as well but well worth watching. I still marvel about how much he did for his club, country and community.

Enjoyed watching this tribute programme, albeit with tears in my eyes. I thought 30 minutes wasn’t enough to celebrate this wonderful man’s career. It would have been nice to have an hour. Still makes me cry seeing the applause at the ground prior to his funeral on a video I have kept as I was there on 4th March. Just summed up what the great man was- true hero, gent and thoroughly deserving of a knighthood. Do rest well Banksy , you remarkable human being.
