How can a player go from the most talked about player outside the top flight, the most feared striker in the Championship, who manages to play for England whilst not plying his trade in the Premiership, to someone dismissed as "gash" who many of you don't want us to touch with a barge pole, after one season at Pompey where he hardly played a game? What do you base your opinions on? I'd rather base mine on the terrific performances he put in at PNE and hope that a new start and a warm welcome would rekindle the fire in a potential match winner of a player. IMHO £4m is far better spent on him than on Ameobi. absolutely spot on. sign him up tone. to those slating him, who on earth do you expect to come here of higher quality than this? rooney? lets get real.

I pretty much agree with all of the more positive comments on here. Harewood is probably Tone's first choice but the comments his agent was making yesterday pointed towards him staying at Villa this year. Soon after this, media reports have us as putting in a 4m bid for Nugent. We know that we were after both players on loan at the end of the season but were unsuccessful so then brought in Ameobi who we allegedly agreed a 4m fee for on winning promotion. However, we realised he is shit so went back for first choice Harewood but weren't hearing the right vibes. Dull city then make an inquiry for our 2nd choice Nugent which prompts Tone to put in a firm 4m bid for him. Bob's your sisters uncle This report was in alll 3 rags today, Sun, Mirror and Star and I would be surprised if there wasn't any real substance to this. I honestly feel that 4m is a fair price for Nugent and would be happy to see us spend that on him.

I thikn he's definitely as good as we'll get, despite this season probably going as badly as it was possible to go for him.
He's only 23 and we could build him up again.
It started badly and got worse and his confidence must be at rock bottom.
The only doubt I've got is how Pulis would see a Nugent-Fuller partnership working?
Would he really start any match, at any level, without a big, strong targetman type?
You'd think TP would much prefer a Roberts/Harewood bulldozer. And there are even suggestionsin the London press that Zamora might be a realistic target for QPR, of all teams?

''Would he really start any match, at any level, without a big, strong targetman type?'' Enter Lee McCulloch on the left wing In all seriousness, Fuller or Nugent are hardly light weights so i think Tone would be happy enough especially with the option of Mamma on the bench. I still think he will be looking to bring in 2 new strikers though...

published about 7 hours ago Early morning reports suggest Stoke City have put in a 4 million pound offer for Portsmouth's David Nugent. The England International who scored on his debut against Andora on March 19 2007 has been struggling at Portsmouth and only making occassional appearances from the bench. Nugent ,23, was part of the Pompey team who lifted the FA Cup last month as he came on in the 2nd half. » Sportnetwork - all - News

4m is a LOT for a player who hasn't really proved anything at the top level, especially when you factor in all the rumours floating around about his commitment. To think that for the same about (and wages) you could get someone like Harewood who has proven goalscoring ability in the Prem and you can see where people are coming from when they criticise this rumour.
That said, Pulis is the type of manager who should be able to get the best out of him again.

You pay for potential too - the fact that Everton, Sunderland and Portsmouth were willing to pay £6m for him is a positive sign and £4m is a fair price in the mad markets of today...
Good signing if it comes off

But will Harewood definitely be available as and when Villa sign another striker?
And, if he is, would he definitely come here, as opposed to Fulham or Rangers etc?
I think Harewood would be a great signing, and he has a better goalscoring track record than Nugent - but he only has one season of success in the Prem and is 5 or 6 years older than Nugent.
Given the choice between the 2, I'd probably plump for Harewood, but of the other semi- realistic domestic strikers we could potentially attract, we could do much worse than Nugent, particularly given his age.

No reason why we wouldn't go for both as a signal of intent?
I live in hope that Crouch is offered in any deal for Barry.
As for Nugent, I hear he is pretty homesick and misses his family and a quick calculation shows Hull being 120 miles from Preston and Stoke being only 67...

NUGENT IS DEFINITELY A REALISTIC TARGET, PORTSMOUTH ARE LOOKING FOR BIGGER FISH NOW AFTER WINNING THE FA CUP AND LOOKING TOWARDS A EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN. TONE WILL BRING THE BEST OUT OF HIM NO DOUBT.

Personally I think he's gash. £4m - what a fucking waste !! Surely we can't be scraping the barrel already I think he will be a great signing and a bit of a coup for us if we pull it off. He will score us 15 goals next season at least.
