The players will probably need a translator for Neil, lambo was hard enough to understand. Not sure how true this is but I've heard Neil doesn't say much he just writes "WIN" on the white board in the dressing room and then turns round and just stares all the players down ... I can see that working.
He would need some fear and respect from his players. His players would know that he is fair, but tough. He would have his players playing for him and the club. But why not? Keep it simple ....

Neil would be brilliant here. Very impressed by what he’s done at Preston on a fraction of the budget. Would like to think we offer more as a long term option than Preston given we could conceivably outspend more or less any team for the next few seasons.

I agree but hard to see why he would come here especially having turned down WBA.

We have deeper pockets than West Brom I suppose, if that counts for anything

Against all historical evidence, I am just hoping that we have a plan in place.
We have sacked our totally incompetent manager, who had delusional dreams of his own magnificence. Can we now just employ a man that actually knows how to recruit and manage a team of men that play football?
I always expect too much, but a man that can spot talent in boys that aspire to be footballers.
Amen

So - who's our Manager on Monday?? Ask John Coates - he will have all of the answers.
It is just a matter of running him down to the pubs that he is using to recruit the dross that he believes to be gold.
Oh - that is when he isn't on holiday, just returning to fire his last dud.

Huge bonus could temp him I suppose, I thought he'd retired from club management but he recently said I do doubt he'd settle for anything less than a premier league Job though. Our board appoint someone who threatened their sensibilities with a few home truths? Even if possible and available, Scholes and Coates couldn't handle a strong character. Do you class TP as a strong character? I think Peter Coates is plenty experienced enough to handle strong characters. If by strong character you mean someone who wants things their own way and/or to take the club in a direction which is contrary to the aims/wishes of the Owners then I think there will always be a problem regardless of the character of the Owner or the CEO. My gut feeling is that Coates/Scholes have no problems with managers holding differing opinions and expressing them forcefully. Their problem (rightly) would be if a consensus can not be reached and the manager decides to do his own thing contrary to policy or seeks to undermine the Board. That is no different to the real world.

Does Scholes have links with PNE? The only link he has with PNE is that he owns a pen.

I could see the reasoning for Jones moving as Luton were in the division below and a massively smaller club.
Something tells me that if Neill is prepared to move to Stoke under these circumstances he would move on from stoke in the same manner.
Doesn't sit right with me .
He will probably do a rowett, get a better contract at PNE and see the season out because of the position they are in. Also not convinced by our ability to pull in someone who isn't looking for a job or sees stoke as a massive step up either, Cartwright leaving may have changed that though but something has been putting certain profile managers off imo for a long time

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/michael-oneill-is-stoke-city-favourite-after-nathan-jones-axe-cfbwdm6f0Michael O’Neill has emerged as the favourite for the Stoke City job vacated yesterday when the struggling Sky Bet Championship club sacked Nathan Jones, sparking a search for their fifth manager in 22 months.
Stoke have also sounded out Chris Hughton, David Moyes and Tony Pulis in recent weeks as it became apparent that Jones, the former Luton Town manager, was on borrowed time.
The Preston North End manager Alex Neil, sitting high in the Championship and having turned down an offer from West Bromwich Albion late last season, is also under consideration but not thought to be a plausible target for a team bottom of the table.
Peter Coates, the longstanding chairman, has seen his influence at the club diminish in recent seasons, with his son and vice-chairman John having become more of a decision-maker.
It was John who took the decision to dismiss Jones yesterday, having been out of the country on business, beforeStoke’s next fixture, against West Brom, at the bet365 Stadium on Monday.
O’Neill is understood to be seeking to test his skills in league management, where his only experience to date is in Scotland, with Brechin City, and Ireland, where he was in charge of Shamrock Rovers.

Hmm, of those named O'Neill is the biggest gamble. And I don't think he'd ditch Northern Ireland yet. I expect he'd be doing two jobs until their qualification group is over?

I’d be fine with Michael O’Neill. In my view most of our current problems boil down to:
1) Jones’ formation. This just doesn’t work unless you have vey specialist players across the pitch. As we found this summer, full backs that can do all the things they are meant to do to make Jones’ formation work are as rare as hen’s teeth. Not seen loads of Northern Ireland but given the results they get with the players they have I’m assuming O’Neill sets them up in a sensible way 2) Terrible player recruitment. This wasn’t all Jones’ fault but is somewhat linked to the first point as we spent all summer chasing full backs that were never going to sign for us and not signing any wingers or competent defensive minded full backs. This is hopefully easily fixed with a few loans in January (I think we can have another two, and three if we bin off Duffy?) and is much easier if we are just trying to recruit for a 4-2-3-1 or similar formation

Does not read well and I suspect we'll get the wrong 'Neil' - could be worse- could be Martin

I see there's lots of talk above about us being able to offer a bigger wage and much bigger transfer kitty and so on to tempt Neil or A N Other if (when) Neil rejects us.
Hopefully I've got it wrong but haven't we previously been worried that our lousy transfers under Rowett and Co. together with the long contracts for Wimmer et al had raised the spectre of possibly contravening FFP if we carried on spending so extravagantly ?
We're obviously a bigger club than PNE but I'm not certain that our current financial situation and constraints with regard to FFP will be attractive to prospective managers.

I think Michael O'Neill (and definitely Martin O'Neill) would be extremely underwhelming and would turn out to be another failure at Stoke.
He just has that "cheap and cheerful" feeling in my opinion. His CV is certainly not inspiring - Shamrock Rovers and Brechin City before N. Ireland - no league experience of any note, and definitely lower league level players. I don't think he'd be able to stop the rot and keep us up and by the end of the season we'd be looking for another new manager. We don't need someone who wants to "test themselves in a league environment" we want someone who's been there and done it and knows what it takes.
If Alex Neil says no (if he really has been approached) then IMO we should steer clear of either of the O'Neill's.
I'd rather have TP back than one of the O'Neill's.

I think I’d prefer Neil to O’Neill given his cv, age etc but just can’t see it happening can you? Yeah - definitely prefer Neil. But does seem tough to get him out of Preston. Definitely shows John is at the wheel if the next cab off the rank is Michael O'Neill, instead of the Pulis safety blanket (although the Times article does suggest we've approached Moyes, Hughton and TP) If Neil and those 3 have turned us down, I really don't envy their choice. They're pretty much screwed whatever they do At least O'Neill is a fresh face on the managerial merry-go-round with no baggage - but he'd be one hell of a punt with his total lack of league management at a decent standard.

How very authoritarian of him! Still, probably best to use simple words that are easy to understand rather than over complicating things with tactical nuances lost on all but those with a higher cause ! what fun! Pick a team, write WIN on the board and p!ss off for a nice glass of Rioja !! job's mine! How goods your "Scotch Stare" though? Neil has perfected it. And he doesn't drink "poncey" wine. It's a mix of Whiskey, Special Brew, Irn Bru chucked in a blender with Haggis and Porridge oats - a pint, down in one. Leave the haggis out I might give it a go

O'Neill really worries me. He's done a good job with limited resources at Northern Ireland.
Rowett did a good job with limited resources at Birmingham and Derby.
Jones produced breathtaking attacking football at Luton with limited resources.
Our players are simply not responding to lower league managers. Why will they see O'Neill any differently? McCarthy, Pulis and Moyes would all make them sit up and take notice, and that is where we should cast our net.
