Don’t think I’ve ever been less interested in a match before. Fair play anyone making the trip up.

There's clearly a massive buzz up there and even if it's their second string, I don't see us getting anything other than a pasting. I really hope we just put in a ballsy performance and put everything into it. It might only be the cup but we can't just meekly surrender yet again. Christ only knows what the current mindset is amongst the players but at the very least, just show a bit of bottle and stop the shit defending.

I’ve just heard a leaked team, which is -
Butland
Batth, CCV, Bruno
Smith, Woods, Clucas, Ward
Ince
Vokes, Campbell
The same source called the Preston team correctly. That could’ve been a guess though! We shall see, probably a load of bollocks 😎

Any Stokie going to this game deserves two things:
1) A medal
2) Sectioning.

He should experiment with a team he would use in a 4231 tonight

A game we don't need, but winning is always a nice feeling. I think he'll go with something like the following: Davies Smith Batth Carter-Vickers Ward Woods Allen Etebo Powell Campbell Hogan Subs: Federici, Collins, McClean, Clucas, Verlinden, Ince, Vokes. Leeds will rest a few but will bring in the likes of Jack Clarke and Helder Costa out wide and Eddie Nketiah up front so will be a tough game........ If the manager has the same approach as you to the League Cup, he won't want risk playing Etebo, Powell, Allen, Hogan, and Woods, because he'll need them fresh, fit and uninjured for an important game vs Brum. If however he has a better attitude, he'll want to play a strong team, because the nice thing about cup games is you can pick up a winning habit and a better atmosphere around the club that can translate to the next game. But. Just what is a strong Jones team? I really have no idea. I've given up on trying to second guess that man. I think the only thing that is for certain is that he'll surprise us with yet another interpretation of his fabled diamond. I just hope his focus will be on winning and not on proving what a tacticcal genius he is, because he is nothing of the kind.

It will be interesting if we get a reaction from Jones/The players tonight... it will certainly show which members of the team are up for a fight...

Ward won't exactly be racing up and down the wing. It's a back 5 basically.

Jesus. Look at all that pace. This three at the back stuff does my head in to be honest. Ward won't exactly be racing up and down the wing. It's a back 5 basically. I've never liked 3 at the back since Hughes started delving into it a few years back. It looks so much more difficult than playing with just a usual two in the centre. If you play as a two, you know exactly what your job is and that's usually one attacking and one covering and you stay right or left. With three at the back, whenever I've played it, I've just found it confusing and it looked the same on Saturday.

If, in the immortal words of someone or other, Jones has "lost the dressing room" - which seems highly likely at this point - expect a drubbing this evening . . . . 5-1 to them.

With three at the back, whenever I've played it, I've just found it confusing and it looked the same on Saturday. Hughes did it because Conte switched to it mid-season and it won him a title. Hughes had next to no tactical system during his time here, we didn't really play a certain way in any of his 5 years (not saying that's a problem, sometimes players only need a formation and will happily do their own thing) and his decision to play 3 at the back completely ignoring the fact we didn't have anywhere near the right players for it was a catastrophic blunder. 3 at the back can be as effective as any other formation, Chris Wilder has 2 of his overlapping the wing backs, Bielsa plays almost exclusively with 3s from defence to attack but the problems arises when you just put 3 at the back and say "go ahead and play boys" without anything else to back it up with. It's why we looked so toothless on Saturday, it was a more solid base but the missing man up top meant we had literally nothing going forward and didn't even try to adjust creative play from midfield.

I most certainly agree. If you have the personnel to do so then it can work as well as anything. Jones played a three to make it more solid but I think three at the back is more suited to an attacking style, rather than a defensive one. Everything was too central for us and we were again attacked down the weaker spots out wide. It doesn't take a great manager to work that out and I certainly don't think on current form, it's something we should be entertaining. Playing with wing backs is a tough system. You could say McClean and Edwards were at fault but I don't think you can expect them to be disciplined at all times playing in those positions. We need to just be wider in general to give ourselves more space if anything but that again means changing the system. McClean had the beating of Dallas on a few occasions going forwards but Dallas did him once and scored. Edwards should have done better for possibly both of the others but when that position is based on basically running your bollocks off, I do sympathise if they caught out.

I’d ditch the diamond and go for a nice simple 433 - even our players could understand that. Stick Collins in the middle in the Nzonzi role with 2 of Allen, Clucas, Woods in midfield, Edwards and Ward at fullback with instructions to concentrate on defending, Verlinden, Gregory and Campbell up front.
Federici Edwards CCV Lyndsey Ward Allen/Woods Collins Clucas Verlinden Gregory Campbell
Instruct the defenders to defend, the midfielders to win the ball and pass it to Verlinden or Campbell, who should then take on their man at every opportunity. If each player is given a specific task, and fails, he has no excuse about the system.

If he wants to play the diamond, he needs to get all players to buy into the diamond and play it in every game to drill them.
For now, league points are paramount, so Jones should pick his team for Saturday and then choose tonight's XI from those not down to start that one.
For me, Saturday should be:
Davies (the guy has to start soon) Smith Carter Vickers Collins Ward
Woods Ince Etebo Powell
Gregory Hogan
So tonight is:
Federici (Jack needs a rest until after the international break and the window has closed)
Edwards Batth Lindsay McClean
Cousins Allen Clucas Duffy
Vokes Campbell

Have to say I’ve also wanted stoke to lose in the past just to hasten the inevitable sacking of a manager, it’s nothning to be ashamed of, sometimes it can bring clarity. Even though I’ve been calling for jones to go since Saturday there’s still a part of me hoping he can turn it around and transform us into a championship version of his Luton side who were genuinely exciting and free scoring, unlikely now I know, but still...

Just write all the players squad numbers on ping bong balls and put em thru a bingo machine just like he's been doing all season .... AND James McClean at left back means, Nathan might as well paint a bullseye on his back, as far as I am concerned.
