I don’t think we’ve ever agreed so unanimously on player ratings - Smith and Allen need dropping for Edwards and Etebo next game.

Butland 7: A bit shaky at times but fantastic save to deny Waghorn and he actually nearly saved a pen. Cracking ball to Gregory for the second.
Smith 6: This was his worst game for us, naive challenge for the pen, full of endeavor going forward but lacking end product. Needs dropping for Edwards to encourage competition Batth: 7: Steady if not spectacular. Lindsay: 6.5: Caught badly for the goal but really loves a tackle and got up well for the equaliser, even though Hogan defo got the last touch McClean 7.5: Thought he was great going forward and carrying the ball, produced a lot of crosses and knitted it with a good defensive game.
Woods 9: A sublime display, he simply allowed us to play in their half for the entire game by sitting on the centre circle and recycling the ball after they cleared, never tired and accurate passing. Allen 4.5: Genuinely poor display topped off by a horrid miss which speaks volumes about his current form. Caught for the first goal by Huddlestone and then for the second by not tracking a runner. Needs dropping. Clucas 8: Another really promising display and was very progressive with his passing and helped out his fullback admirably. Showing a much better head down attitude that I think Jones is encouraging. Ince: 7.5 Busy if not too effective, should have scored really but we don't have a better player for running at people.
Gregory 8: Ran his bollocks off but has already shown he's much more than just that, cracking assist for the goal and great play to realise the space he had in behind their back 3. Hogan 8: Two goals, the one he knew about he took superbly. Ran hard like Gregory and already looks effective in comparison to our strikers of recent years.
Subs:
Collins 6: Not too sure what to say, didn't do anything wrong and didn't impact either way really. Campbell 6: Should have done a bit more with his chance in terms of holdup or taking on his man, as is he snatched a bit nervously at it. Fucking frightening pace though, his time will come. Etebo 6: Bit rusty, bad pass but still retains his excellent rampaging running. Should play for Allen next week.

Butland 7.5 Smith 5 Baath 6.5 Lindsay 6 McLean 7 (not a fan but was decent) Woods 8 (great game) Allen 4 (awful) Clucas 6 Ince 7 (big moaner about Ince but he played well) Gregory 7 Hogan 7.5
Collins 6 Campbell 6 Etebo 7 (added pace and drive when appeared - should have replaced Allen at 60 mins latest!)
Like the forward boys, need a spark of creativity behind or some pace as too slow and pedestrian building up - note when we went long down the channels quickly we scored.....
Not sure what Smith brings to the party yet, McClean will be exposed vs a top drawer winger but did work his bag off
Joe had a stinker, was crying out for Etebo earlier or even Duffy late on

Butland: 7 (looked more solid and even his distribution was pretty good) Smith: 5 (not sure what he brings that is better than Edwards) McClean: 8 (slightly shaky start, then played as well as he has for us so far) Lindsay: 6 (didn't inspire me with confidence, though improved slightly) Baath: 6 (okay overall) Woods: 8 (began to control the game, but shaky defensively) Allen: 5 (I don't go along with all the criticism he gets but he was poor for half the game before some improvement) Clucas: 7 (a solid performance) Ince: 8 (our main threat for much of the game before a knock forced him off) Gregory: 8 (his anticipation in setting up the second goal was excellent) Hogan: 8 (excellent finish which could easily have ballooned over the bar, and how good to see two forwards working together)

It will send out a terrible message if Smith starts tomorrow.

Butland: 7 - could have done better with the pen though. Smith: 7 - as good as Edwards but better defensively. McClean: 6 - not a full back and if he is the answer I don’t know the fucking question. Lindsay: 7 - looked good in spells, better to come from him. Baath: 6 - could be better in defensive areas. Woods: 6 - not for me. Allen: 4 - had a shocker especially with that chance! Clucas: 7 - didn’t do too much wrong. Ince: 7 - needs more composure in front of goal, missed a golden opportunity to pass it into the net but blasted it. Gregory: 8 - full of running works well with Hogan. Hogan: 8 - eye for goal and good link up play.

So honest question from someone who could only listen to the game. If Allen was so obviously terrible why would Jones not pull him off at half or at least early in the 2nd? Seems to me that is generally a managers job during the match. Recognize a deficiency and change it!

Seems to me that is generally a managers job during the match. Recognize a deficiency and change it! Because he wasn't THAT bad. None of them were any good for the first 30 mins. In the second half everyone was better including Allen but some people just seem to give no allowance for Allen to have to get used to the system and think its ok to cry for him to be dropped week after week. Clucas is allowed to fade in and out and Ince go missing, Smith do naff all at right back but ALL goals must be traced back, no matter how far, to a mistake by Joe Allen. Before long, a goal scored in the 30th minute will be traced back to a mistake made by Joe Allen in the 4th minute.
