Hopefully he sticks with us and has the opportunity next year to try himself in the Premier League with us (If we get there) Exciting times for sure! I don’t think we are ready to go up this year personally. I personally think it’s best for everyone involved if we flirt with play offs this year, with Collins establishing himself this year. He’s then our captain going into next years championship season which we get promoted in. He’ll have 18-24months experience in the Championship and will be ready to take the premier league by storm.

Yeah, I'm well aware that defenders should be playing footy too. I won't laud a defender because he knows how to play a 5 yard pass, his strength is exactly that. Nathan Stones Against QPR he put in some absolutely superb tackles, he's not just a "passer". Eze also jinked his way past our entire midfield on the way to goal leaving Collins exposed 1 on 1. Even the best defenders get done 1 on 1 because it's not a situation they should be in often if their midfield is doing their job properly. I've seen Shawcross give loads of penalties away when he's been exposed 1 on 1. The use of Stones as a pejorative term when he literally plays for the best manager in the world is a bit odd too. I don't get what's not to like from one of our top youth prospects playing well in a game he's been selected in? I don't see it. Stones is meh. He's an average defender in a team full of truly world class players, only because he's English. He was good briefly when he started out. I compared because I see very good technical ability in Collins but defensively ... Error prone and clunky I hope Collins is successful, I just don't rate him myself.

The key to establishing a solid defence is finding two CBs that can gel and develop an almost telepathic relationship. Bloor/Smith and Shawcross/Huth were the cornerstones of their respective teams. They instinctively knew what the other was going to do and covered up each other’s inevitable mistakes. Huth didn’t fit into Hughes’s plan and there may have been other issues that we don’t know about. However, the fact remains he never found a replacement, which coincided with the beginning of the end - in fact switching to three at the back meant he needed to find two replacements, he never found one.
Edit: Jones is doing it right because he has several possibilities to evaluate. Butland will benefit too from having players in front of him that he knows he can rely on. Banks was the best ever but having Smith and Bloor in front of him was an ideal combination

I don't see him taking the risks that Stones does bringing the ball out or looking for a Hollywood pass. Also looks far stronger physically and seems to be far more mature than John Stones - he was bollocking older players last night when they weren't doing their jobs. We need to enjoy him while we can as he won't be here for ever. Even if we were in the premier league I don't think we'd keep him if he reaches his full potential.

I thought he was the strongest, bravest centre-half I ever played behind. He helped me keep clean sheets and built my reputation ..................".That is an amazing complement considering Banksy won the WC before he ever had Denis playing in front of him and already had a reputation of being the best.

“He is captain material, real captain material, and he will go on to be the captain of this Football Club."
“His temperament is top drawer, he doesn’t get fazed or carried away by anything and I really believe he is going to go on and enjoy a wonderful career.
“In fairness to the other lads, there were a number of them I could have given the armband to tonight because we have a number of leaders here.
“We have Adam Federici here who is experienced and vocal, Macca who is very experienced and leads by example, young Liam Lindsay, who is maybe quieter, but really plays with authority."
He added: “There are so many of them who were candidates, but I gave it to Nathan because I trust him - he is a good kid, and somebody I have enormous faith and belief in.”

Will he do it (or play him) in a game that matters? I think last night really mattered, could have been three loses on the bounce. The fact it was a cup game shouldn't overshadow the importance of getting a win and hopefully stringing together some wins and form.

I don’t think it changes anything for Saturday though in terms of crowd mentality. Good for the squad though.

Will he do it (or play him) in a game that matters? He just did! He would have been under massive pressure if we had lost that game. Very few managers would have even played him never made him Captain.

Very few managers would have even played him never made him Captain. I disagree. He made wholesale changes and treated it like most teams treat the League Cup. And I disagree. Most managers would have played him on Saturday and then this Saturday and the next one.

He's 18, he has potential but he is not the finished article yet. He will make mistakes but it all depends on how quickly he learns from them. It's hardly fair saying he is error prone. As for rating him, how do you rate a kid who has only played a handful of games and playing in a role that demands huge experience? It's not a fair opinion if I'm honest. He might not be ready for the 1st team but he has loads of time to improve.

That's why any 'win bounce' lasts only as long as it takes to get to the next game.

It’s the home crowd he needs to impress too. When did we last win at home? If it wasn’t the Leeds game, I’ve forgotten it.

Will he do it (or play him) in a game that matters? I actually think last night was one of the most important games of NJ’s reign. I think he simply had to win. Otherwise he was a long way to losing the fans with no light at the end of the tunnel.

Otherwise he was a long way to losing the fans with no light at the end of the tunnel. If we go a goal down on Saturday, that light will be flickering surely? The league is the bread and butter. Last night will be a confidence booster but we beat the Wigan reserves in a competition that is only semi serious nowadays.

I think that any team is never ready to go up to the Prem. The fact that outside the top 6 & Everton, we were the longest serving PL team when we were relegated illustrates the point exactly. I'd rather scrape up and come straight back down again with a season of Prem experience and money plus parachute payments than flirt with the playoffs spending another year down here with the financial pressure that brings, then go up, only to come back down again within a few years anyway.
