Brainless, absolutely brainless.
Sweeps have been working nicely, there's no chance we're going to win the game so why try and hit him out of the attack....

There’s a bit of thing going on at the moment where you can dig up and old Archer tweet that is relevant to pretty much every situation that arises during a match.

What an absolute clown Denly is. He must have known he’d hit that.
Some astonishingly brainless cricket going on this morning, even by England’s standards.

We're playing like it's the first innings, not like we're trying to save the game, brain dead.
Buttler ahead of Stokes again, can't see why.

Denly is nowhere near test standard. It’s as plain as the nose on your face so not sure why the selectors can’t see it?

It's absolutely pathetic how we've just basically given the game to the Aussies after having them at 120-8 in the first innings. Stupid from Roy and Denly and we're three wickets down before lunch. No doubt Root will make some meaningless comments after the game but it won't disguise the fact that the Aussies will more than likely be 1-0 up after a game we should have won but managed to throw away.

Something sadly predictable about this morning's cricket.
Without having to work very much, Australia have already picked up 3 wickets; Burns having had a ton of luck in the first innings was unlikely to get the same rub of the green second time round. Roy showed he hasn't (yet - ever?) got the mentality for test match batting while Denly showed why he simply isn't a test batsman.
Big opportunity now though for both Root and Buttler. Root to show he deserves to be included with Smith, Kohli and Williamson as a great bat, Buttler to show he deserves a place as a top order batsman.
I won't hold my breath.

Root gone - game over by mid afternoon now I reckon
85-4 after the way the Aussies batted yesterday - what a shambles !

A few years ago, he was in that bracket. But whereas Kohli worked on his weakness and all but eliminated it (v the moving ball) and Smith decided mid test match to trust his hand eye in shuffling across to stop nicking it Root appears to have let the burden of captaincy and the mental pressure of his conversion rate damage his game a lot. He’s now way behind and stuck in a rutt all of his own making.

He’s now way behind and stuck in a rutt all of his own making. Absolutely. Two or three years ago Root was on a par with those players. Since then he had regressed while the others have flourished. The only thing is Root's decline started well before he became captain. His failure to convert 50s into hundreds was established while Cook was captain.

To win the Ashes now,we have to win 2 out of 4 and lose none.
Can't see it happening,we have too many players who are not up to the job.

Got to think that the Aussies are going to comfortably take this series. I’m not sure. The Anderson injury has cost us this match. I honestly think we’d already have the game won now if he stayed fit. A few will have taken a huge confidence hit after this defeat though and mental strength isn’t something many of our players are renowned for. The most worrying thing is our leader looks miles out of his depth.

A few will have taken a huge confidence hit after this defeat though and mental strength isn’t something many of our players are renowned for. The most worrying thing is our leader looks miles out of his depth. There are quite a few changes we need to make - but I'm not sure we will make the changes in time to give us the best opportunity to win this series. 1) pick a specialist (in form) opening batsman - i.e. Sibley 2) drop Denly - and play Roy at 4 3) drop Bairstow - and play Foakes 4) drop Ali - and play Leach 5) play Archer (or if he ain't fit someone else who can hit 90mph) That last one, due to Anderson's injury, is almost a given and something we'll see at Lords. The other changes are proactive (rather than reactive) and will require more balls than we've seen in recent times by the selectors (who, if they did this, would be admitting they've got their selection process horribly wrong, something i don't see them doing. Well, not until it is too late).

Fuck off Buttler. Another player who needs to up his test game. I don’t think you can blame Buttler. He shouldn’t be anywhere near the test side. He averages 33 in first class cricket. Shoehorned into the side because of his excellence in white ball cricket.
