I just happened to switch BBC on this afternoon and saw my only twenty seconds of Wimbledon that I'll be watching this year. I was unfortunate enough to catch a few seconds of a game between two females (I think one was Azerenko or something like that) who were both shrieking every time they hit the ball. It was really loud and really bloody annoying even for the short time I watched it. How the hell do the spectators manage to sit through a full game having to put up with that row ?

Let me restore your faith, Dees - and I just thought I'd mention this even though I know you'll be unlikely to look at any more Wimbledon as you've said in posts in past years that you actively dislike tennis - however there's a match on BBC1 at the moment and both players are blissfully 'quiet' - the way it used to be, and I must admit it's absolutely heavenly. The match is between two players I'd never heard of before this week: Polona Hercog and Cori ('Coco') Gauff, the 15 y.o. American newcomer and wildcard entry who amazed everyone by beating Venus Williams on the first day. Although these two are a joy to watch because of their quietness, I have a horrible feeling that other female players over the next 10 days will be screaming their heads off again, which is such bad news because I just can't watch them - the din they make is intolerable and, as you say, I can't understand how the fans there can stand being subjected to it for an hour or two each match. I don't know where the screaming with every hit of the ball started, but I would guess it was at tennis schools in the USA. I was so glad when Maria Sharapova got a drugs-related ban a couple of years ago, because for me she's the absolute worst of the lot and at least during her ban we had a break from her screeching for a year or two.

Thanks for the update murph - I'm sorry but I just can't "get" tennis. It's good to know that not all of the female players yell and screech - I think it was Sharapova who was the main culprit a few years ago and it seems the coaches have instilled it into their players "you gotta screech if you wanna win" ! Anyway hope you enjoy the silence while it lasts murph !

Went to school in Wimbledon and used to be able to go watch early evening as people leaving would give you their tickets and you’d be allowed in with them (clearly doesn’t happen now!). Never a big tennis fan but we went several times. One thing that irked me was our school was one of several that supplied ball boys for the tournament, who got 3 weeks off school for training and the event. They always selected the “C stream” kids, so those of us that worked hard got penalised by not being able to do it (lol I have slacks ever since in reaction to this and it’s got me nowhere!!!)

Incidentally, I must say, the ballboys/girls always seem superbly disciplined........ they had a solid week in training back then and sure the same now, if not more. I assume they still harvest the ball boys n girls from a pool of local schools as makes sense. Another one that’s popped into my head was most of the bigger names would rent houses in the area , and a local British Leyland dealer would supply a fleet of Wimbledon branded Mini Metros , and the tournament hired what appeared to be models with driving licences to ferry them around between games and at start and end of day. If you saw a car, you’d have a fighting chance of seeing a big name - we saw Chris Evert once- Or failing that, you’d just see a very pretty driver lol , I speak from a teenage boy perspective!
