Contemplating on two destinations for a family holiday.
1/ The wife has always wanted to go to China but I’ve been told I need to split the duration over new and old China, would I be better booking through a travel agent to organise things so I get the max out of the holiday or basically research it myself and just go for it and what happens happens.
2/ Hawaii again on the radar, chilled out but 3 weeks of loud Americans lording it seems a tad annoying for me.

China is quite straight forward to research and book on line. In fact probably better than a travel agent Hawaii depends totally on which Island you choose and what you are looking for. Sadly have only ever had shortish trips/stops there so never got to see so much. I would suggest trying to make it a double visit and take in two. Some of the islands are quite stunning and far from full of our socks and sandal wearing friends

I'd personally go for China but spending days on a beach doesn't appeal much to me.
Definitely wouldn't use a travel agent either, half the fun is researching and booking it, for me anyway.
Just look on Skyscanner or something similar for multi destination flights (then ring dial a flight to see if they'll beat the prices) once you've decided where you're going.
Trip advisor is what I use for what to see and sometimes where to stay, there's lots of links off there for booking accommodation.
You could also use airbnb.
I've only been to Beijing so far but I found it fascinating and the Great Wall is well worth the effort.
