Sorry mate. I work on this and we're fucking the climate up for ourselves, especially the future. The media campaign to trick people into thinking it's a hoax etc is a serious scandal. 😞 What media campaign? Loads of political and industry groups have worked on spreading bullshit about it - this book has some of the history. Sometimes it was even the same people who lied to the public about smoking and lung cancer etc. Loads of the media and journalists bought into it, the Daily Mail, Fox etc were a big part of it for ages. It's fucked up, people don't realise how much shit we've put ourselves in. 😢 EDIT: The Global Warming Policy Foundation in the UK, Heritage, Heartland, Cato etc in the USA. What they've done is evil IMO.

There can't be too many people still left with their heads in the sand and thinking climate change isn't happening is there? But it's getting your average person to try and change the small basics of their life, to try and help the environment, as well as doing after the big polluters.

The EU party election coming up here in early June and the EAP says there's no pollution, heat or climate change whatsoever. The Earth has never felt better. One other argument sometimes heard here is: of course there is a climate change, but there have always been climate changes on this planet, that's why the dinosaurs died out, that's why Kingdoms have come and go, that's why Atlantis disappeared et cetera. Me personally think the climate change is rapid. And I do recycling weekly, the only transportation I use is walking.

I think it's as simple as replacing economic growth as a measurement of success. But no one in a big enough position of power will even suggest that.

I think it's as simple as replacing economic growth as a measurement of success. But no one in a big enough position of power will even suggest that. Replaced with what? "Replace" was the wrong word. I really mean get rid of it. Even the guy who came up with GDP said it was a bad idea to use it. It was introduced during WWII as a way to improve morale (building of arms etc. increases economic growth). War is actually brilliant conditions to increase GDP - maybe the best way. Chopping down the Amazon rainforest increases GDP of those countries. Why is constant growth in an economy necessary? Businesses can and do still make profits (or even break even) and employ people without the growth at all costs mentality many have, but thanks to the obsession with growth we have this throwaway society. If there has to be a measurement, then something that's good for society as a whole rather than the current model that sees the rich get richer and often the poor, poorer. There are countries looking into using some form of wellbeing as a measurement - I forgot the Finnish PM had actually suggested it: stm.fi/en/economy-of-wellbeing (no idea if any are thinking of replacing GDP or using wellbeing as an extra measurement). I must have said this earlier in the thread, but the only thing in nature that can grow infinitely is cancer, and that eventually kills us if it can't be treated.

I think I read the % of Americans who supposedly don’t believe in climate change recently. If true it was horrifying.

We've looked at similar for one of our large data centres to heat an office block nearby, but different landlords (even though it's one entrance to both) and costs of running the pipework puts off the bean counters, it is a good idea. We've also looked at full heat reclaim on the office building but once again the costs put off the bean counters, pisses me off when there's pictures of wind turbines in green fields in meeting rooms saying transforming for a greener future or some shit like that.

I'd like to see some sort of degrowth from experts, and citizen happiness as a measure of success

At our internationally accredited business school at the university the students are taught economic growth aren't really growth to begin with. It is seen as a need for getting status quo in the best of worlds. Even if the figures say something, you have to consider things like migration and population growth. The need for more resources to our public sector comes with more people, therefore you have to get a growth. If these people to some extent also are rather old or sick or dyslectic you won't expect them to contribute that much.
You can't slice a 8-piece tart to 12 people all of a sudden and expect everyone to be equally happy. Therefore you need growth.
Since the millenium shift the economic growth in Sweden is doubtful. The migration and globalisation hasn't helped the situation. Besides, a much better measure is real wages, and preferably with a bit of adjustment calculation effort.

If you're interested in different ways of seeing an economy you should study the field The Economics of Happiness. My mentor mentioned it, but I studied real wages instead ...
Mark Anielski wrote a book in 2007 or something ... But there are others. Check it out!

Having been to The Netherlands and Portugal over the last few weeks, you realise what a filthy litter ridden dump this country is becoming, with lots of fat, lazy, self obsessed individuals, it will be hard to change their way of thinking.
