Anything created today is based in the world of today. That's how science fiction has always worked. Saying something will be treated differently in the future is a comment on the present.
I've not read the article as the page wants me to disable my adblocker and the page has 23 adverts it wants unblocking...

While I can see what you're saying I still think it's ridiculous that they are under fire for making a comment on state of advertisement, it's no different to others such as Blade Runner with the mass advertisements on the side of skyscrapers for brands such as Atari etc. the only difference here is that because it's got a transgender person in it, it's an issue. There would probably be an issue if it wasn't a transgender person as well as people would say why does it have to be a man/woman instead.
