35 years since England win 2-0 in Brazil and barnes scored that goal. ITV decided to only show the 2nd half LIVE because it clashed with Cilla Black’s ‘Surprise Surprise’

Don't think was that big a shock as the 82 Brazilian side had all but quit the national team but came back for the 86 tournament. Roberto Dinamite was a great name, great club player and decent record for Brazil but no Zico or Eder. Was a very experimental Brazil side and a good England side although think they'd had a couple of losses before that, Russia maybe at home ?. Hateley was such a great CF

Hateley was such a great CF You could argue it was an experimental or transitional England team too. Dave Watson (Norwich), Mark Chamberlain, John Barnes, Mike Duxbury, Mark Hateley all started the game and were newcomers.

Hateley got 32 caps but didn't seem to establish himself. Despite his goalscoring record not being too bad.

Thought Chamberlain had a decent game,if I recall correctly, but he was overshadowed by Barnes' amazing goal!

Duxbury had made a howler v Russia the week before. Yep Chamberlain was excellent as was Hateley and Robson.

It as a bleak time for English football. And it was going to get a lot worse.

He did get injured a lot but we missed the best of him as he was playing in Italy and France and you were lucky to see a 30 second clip once a month on Football Focus. I remember them doing a clip on him at Detroit Express when hailed as England's new centre forward as Trevor Francis went there at the end of his career and Hateley was about 20. As a 4 or 5 year old I wanted their kit desperately after seeing it.
