I worry today we just don't seem to have courage to endure anymore. I know our armed forces are second to none but they are a limited supply. God forbid we need such men again to fight for our country in the future because our youth just don't have the same kind of honour and pride. It’s the one thing I hope that we will never have to be proved wrong on.

Agree to a degree mate, but modern warfare you are very unlikely to get close physically to your enemy, you are more likely to be taken out by a drone operated from a bunker several 1000 miles away than be shot by a soldier. True but at some point a person is going to have to put boots on the ground and flush out the sewers.

Should be every year from now on Definitely, celebrate these superbly heroic people while they are still around and able to appreciate it. It's easy to become almost desensitised to war with modern media coverage and meretricious politicians who've never been near a combat zone trotting out platitudes about the horror.but when you hear the words coming from people who witnessed and experienced it first hand it's impossible not to be immensely moved and humbled by it. I watched an interview today with an American veteran, describing coming out of the landing craft, being terrified and the ramp lowering onto the myriad bodies of GI's not knowing whether they were dead, alive or drowning and how it haunted him for years afterwards. I snorted back a lot of my own snot I tell thee....

It seems that not everyone felt inclined to honour the bravery and dedication of the D-Day veterans and those that died. Some absolute morons have seen fit to smash some gravestones in Shipley, near Bradford, commemorating soldiers who fought in the First and Second World Wars. linkIf they ever find who did this they should be named, shamed and suitably punished. It's an absolute disgrace.

You just can't believe it, can you? What is it these cretins have knocked into their heads to think it's alright to do this sort of thing? Imagine the distress of the families invloved. Utterly disgusting.

Those fearless men and women sacrificed everything to secure our future, and look at the state the country is in now, they must be wondering why they even bothered.
It must be absolutely devastating for them to witness, it makes me ill.
I echo the sentiments above, they should be celebrated annually.

Hi all, my grandad served in ww2 and was involved with the d day landings but never spoke about it so I have no idea on which beach he landed or where he went. Unfortunately he's passed away so he will never get to tell me what he saw or went through during that time. I know which regiment he served under but all the rest is sketchy. Does anybody know how I could possibly access his historic army records to shed some light on what he did and where he went after the landings?

Gordon Forces war records might help or the Union Jack Club in London www.forces-war-records.co.uk/
