Was a great poster and a top lad too.
Was always humble when Stoke did them, things have certainly reversed today.
Hope he's had a great day and if he should see this say hello ππ

Question for Villa fans: With Wolves seemingly set for continued long term serious investment will Villa fans start seeing them as their truest rivals?

Question for Villa fans: With Wolves seemingly set for continued long term serious investment will Villa fans start seeing them as their truest rivals? I dont think this will ever happen....WBA fans of a certain age have always seen the Villa as their rivals ( only a three mile walk away- and one of their stands is actually in Birmingham). That is a keen rivalry by any stretch for both sets of fans. The hatred between the Blues and Villa is though on another level, and seems to have been getting worse for about 35 years. Wolves are a bit like us - not having real intense local rivalry. The Baggies fans in Tipton and Wednesbury think the "Black Country" derby is where its at- but half the Baggies fan base comes from Smethwick, North and West Birmingham and Great Barr and think Wolverhampton is a far off planet and look to Birmingham for socializing and football banter Im clearly not a Villa fan- but base that opinion on having lived in both Birmingham and the Black Country for a 25 year spell. The pomposity of the Wolves Fan base based on a few good years in the 1950s is recognised by many, and both the City and the Club feels like a bit of geographic outlier- with WBA, Villa and Blues all being located within a 3/4 mile radius of Birmingham city centre

I could not of put that any better if I'd tried π Great post mate and 100% right UTV Quite happy to buy into this. Villa are the biggest club, traditionally,in the Midlands. Wolves want to be. Wolves might one day aspire to the biggest West Midland club, as they were in the 1950s perhaps, but we've got a long, long way to go to overtake Villa, and to be honest its not even on the agenda. Villa are by some way the biggest and best supported West Midland club and probably always will be, they are at least 20% bigger than Wolves, I would say Wolves fan-base potentially is about 10% bigger than Blues and Albion. That pomposity that existed is mainly in older Wolves fans, cos all we have known in the last 40 years before last season was 4 premiership seasons, and 2 of them we went down, and the other two only just survived. We know just how shit we've been. What's happening now is just very lucky (with FOSUN) and it could end tomorrow. Just enjoying it whilst it lasts. I wouldn't however say we don't have a real derby, the Black Country derby will always be our number one derby, whether some Albion fans feel it is their number one derby or not. At the moment they hate the Villa undoubtedly, because of recent results. Must admit, having not played Albion for a few years now, its quite nice as we nearly always lose. Wolves and Villa will be thrown against each other again next season, and whilst there has been sniping from both sets of fans, actually there is a sort of underlying mutual respect, or at least little real hatred. I guess Wolves and Villa fans rarely come across each other, as there are proportionately few Wolves fans in Brum, and few Villa fans in Wolverhampton. Villa really hate Blues, and Albion next. Wolves are hated way less by Villa fans. Blues hate Villa, and then Wolves more than the Albion I would say. Wolves hate Albion, then Blues, then Villa. Albion are the strange one - in the 70s they hated Villa most, then from the 80s-90s Wolves most, now back to Villa most. I guess that is down to who they have been playing most recently. Blues and Albion just tolerate each other to some degree. As others have said Albion get their support mainly from the Black Country, but also a lot from West/north Birmingham, which is where the confusion starts. Villa have strong support in Albion areas of the Black Country (Halesowen, Rowley Regis etc). Tipton is where Wolves- Albion support traditionally splits. Its often called the Tipton-divide. But even then, you can have neighbours who support the other team, there is a mix wherever you go, rarely will you find 'solid wolves or Albion' until you really get close to Wolverhampton or West Bromwich. But between Wolves and Albion, I would say the splits are roughly this.......... Wolves main areas are Wolverhampton (95-5), Bilston (85-15), Wednesfield (90-10), Sedgley (75-25), Gornal (70-30), Willenhall (80-20), Darlaston (65-35), Coseley (60-40), Kingswinford (60-40), and perhaps even northern Tipton around Princes End(55-45). Also northern Walsall around Bloxwich, Mossley, Short Heath....plus strong support in Cannock, Rugeley, Telford. Also Kidderminster is split pretty equally between Wolves, Albion, and Villa, Stafford is split between Wolves and Stoke. I would say Stoke have gained a more strong foothold last decade or so. Albion main areas are West Bromwich (95-5), Smethwick (90-10), Wednesbury (75-25), most of Tipton like Great Bridge and Dudley Port (70-30), Rowley Regis (80-20), Blackheath (70-30), Halesowen (90-10), Oldbury (90-10), Tividale (90-10) and to some degree southern Walsall. Then also areas of Brum like Harbourne, Handsworth, Great Barr, even Edgbaston. Areas like Dudley, Netherton, Brierley Hill, Stourbridge, Pensnett are really mixed between Wolves and Albion, sometimes they seem more Albion, sometimes more Wolves. Guess Albion have gained more support over past 20 years but now things changing a bit again. Birmingham is 60-40 to Villa, though inner-city Brum is pretty equally split between Villa and Blues, and South Birmingham there is a lot of Blues. Now if that shit doesn't bore you what will .

I lived and played football in Birmingham from 1978 until 1985 and this analysis is spot on. In that time 3 of the 4 teams were actually pretty good - WBA were the Ron Atkinson runners up, Villa won the league and European cup and Wolveswon the League Cup and were In Europe ( and continually played the same near post corner routine that we employed in the days of Big Bren). The only team that was totally clueless was The Blues ( although they still managed to beat us fairly regularly!)

It had 16 high rise blocks and social behaviour which would have seen John Wayne get on his horse and leg it to Smethwick while shouting for help from the Sioux Nation...I was once knocked over by a stale slice of bread which scored a direct hit on my head having been propelled from the 15th floor of Chiltern House- I always join in with the Bread song when we play the Baggies..... back to the thread- Villa are a massive club not just because they have the largest fan base in Birmingham, but becuase they have a hinterland as well stretching from Lichfield in the North to Worcester in the South- No other Midlands club can draw on a geography like that
