I have seen Jones already give three young Under 23 players an opportunity at a time when the pressure is on him not to take risks. I personally have no reason to doubt Jones's judgement regarding who plays and who doesn't. Fans will always have contrary opinions. I have no doubt there are fans at Luton who fancied themselves at picking a better team but it seems to me that Luton's double promotion, a progress Jones initiated, says he didn't do a bad job. It’s just the youth thing. I’ve seen it as Campbell be shipped off on loan, Verlinden put in a MoM performance then not start again and Collins not even on the mech and this was in nothing games. If he doesn’t end up playing the young ones then it’s his call of course. I just find it interesting that that’s what’s been said and people are under the impression NJ has a track record of playing youth players when he doesn’t seem to have such track record. I’m not judging him now. I’m just a bit struck by the mismatch in words and actions and this board is for debate so just pointing things out. Not meaning to be overly negative or judgemental! How many minutes for the club had Verlinden and Collins played before he arrived? He wasn’t obliged to play them, it was his call. He’s blooding them slowly. Edwards has had his biggest run in the side under him. Luton’s full backs became the best in League 1 on his watch.

Did Jones specifically mention buying in youth to create a young side, or did he say he wanted to create a fast, attacking, aggressive side with no specific mention of young players? I’m pretty sure he’s mentioned ‘young, athletic’ players etc. as well as having a more ‘youthful’ squad. (I may have misremembered that of course). I must admit I don’t take what he’s said to necessarily mean he’ll be promoting lots of our own youth players into the match day squad, although some seem to be picking it up as a stick to beat him with already.

That’s what the Layton fans he said which I was pointing out and asking where the evidence is of him having a track record of playing youth players which I very clearly made a point of reintegrating that it was a genuine question. Jeez.

Jeez. And I’ve responded by pointing out that he’s used more academy graduates here than any manager this decade and there’s at least three notable examples in his Luton side too.

As I've said before, assuming Vokes and Afobe will be given playing time, if we signed a young striker where would that leave Campbell? It seems to me that Jones can't do right for doing wrong. He's criticised for not playing our academy players and sending them out on loan but also criticised for not bringing in a young striker who would definitely block the route to the first team to Campbell for several years. Please look at the bigger picture.
