My first reaction was, So what! It's a royal baby and I don't care. It's not as if this has got anything to do with black people.
My second reaction was, The kid has black heritage, what a fucking dense thing to do as a joke.

It's an unbelievably dumb thing to do and almost impossible to defend. I suppose the only defence you could make is that, would Danny Baker really be stupid enough to essentially fire himself from what must be a very well paid gig if he had even a modicum of awareness of the connotations of the tweet? I actually had a discussion with a family member and they were flabbergasted when I pointed out Harry's new missus was mixed race, to the point where I had to google search her mum to prove it.

The joke itself was an attempt to parody the furore and frankly ludicrous overreaction of a posh baby being born and it’s obviously gone fairly disastrously wrong. There isn’t any evidence to suggest he’s an actual racist, merely an accidental one and if you work at the BBC you can’t be an accidental racist.
The real moral of the story is the danger of bloody twitter. If you’re constantly and I mean pretty much constantly broadcasting to the world as Danny Baker does on it (much of it very funny), some of it whilst pissed, eventually it is bound to go wrong and whether intentional or not you have to pay the price.
As much as I read it every day, I wouldn’t give two shits to discover twitter has disappeared up its own arsehole tomorrow.

Haven't got any sympathy for anyone who tries to be clever on Twitter. It's just a massive ego and self-flattering operation
He'd have got away with it in a pub, and that's precisely where its best kept.

My second reaction was, The kid has black heritage, what a fucking dense thing to do as a joke. It's a weird one. My ex is black, and believe me, I heard some horrible stuff when I was with her. Most by work mates who didn't know about my situation. They quickly apologised when they found out! So, I totally get the monkey connotations, because I have heard them, but I also think it's a bit wrong to immediately think he's being racist. He might have used ET or something else to take the piss, and would probably have been wiser, but I question the immediate linking to chimpanzees and someone being mixed race. Overall, though, it's a case of "Fucking hell, Danny, what were you thinking?".

The lesson here is that whatever the intent, once you put something out in social media it is completely out of your control. Its open to whatever interpretations may exist. I don't believe he's racist but it's not just about what he believes. I hope it leads some people to think a bit before they try to impress the world with their tweets and posts. Thinking is good!

i wonder how many people lining up to express how upset/offended they are by it actually saw it on twitter and not on a news site?

Not excusing the obvious racial connotations but I think the idea was similar to the old joke about putting a red rosette on a monkey and they'd still vote for it in Stoke. Baker isn't racist, just didn't think this one through.

The world has gone mad it’s getting to the stage where freedom of speech is in real danger
People today will be offended by almost anything it’s getting to the stage if somebody’s mugged they’d complain the mugger took it easier on them because of there gender or age ( I demand to be mugged as hard as the next person )
I suggest some or the easily offended watch some of the best comedies of the late seventies and eighties and early nineties None of which would be commissioned today and the world would have been a lot poorer for it

I doubt that it was racist, and frankly I've not heard many sane people calling him a racist. The issue here is that public statements like the one he made help to perpetuate the abuse people that people of African decent are trying to escape. It's the reason nobody in their right minds would think that the "Nig Nog" jokes from the popular 70's comedy, Love Thy Neighbour are acceptable or funny anymore.

I am sorry but a picture of a white man and a black woman leaving a maternity hospital with a chimp is one that could have come straight from the archives of the KKK.
I find it beyond belief that any reasonable (and sober) person wouldn't have immediately seen the connotation associated with the picture.
If it was purely meant to be a critique of wealth and privilege then why was it not used for any of the children of William & Kate?

If it was purely meant to be a critique of wealth and privilege then why was it not used for any of the children of William & Kate? I've just seen a doorstep interview where Baker claims that he didn't even know which Royal couple had just had a baby - so he had no idea that the baby's mother was mixed race!!!! If that is true (and I rather doubt that it is) then he is the sort of person who really should never post on twitter because sooner or later he was bound to post something which he would regret. But, as I said, I doubt he was telling the truth - it sounds like a coward's way of trying to avoid falling into the hole he has dug for himself. As others have said, I really don't get the obsession many people have with twitter. Not everyone falls into the trap of posting before they think the thing through, but far too many do end up looking stupid - or worse!

It was a revelation to me when I saw an interview with a black american on tv yesterday being all proud about the new Royal baby's black heritage. Doesn't matter to me I just thought I'd woke up in a parrallel reality. Even more shocking perhaps was the idea that there's some debate going on whether kate & Wills' lad might be gay!!!! He's 3 or summat... all boys hate girls until we're about twelve don't we?
