He might actually be very good at his job. I met Gareth a couple of times when he was still a Stoke player. A very likeable bloke, easy to talk to and a good communicator. I spent pretty much the whole of one of our pre-season games against Newcastle Town stood next to him and enjoyed every minute of the match in his company - he certainly isn't short of ideas, nor did he have any difficulty in getting them across. The proof of the pudding is always in the eating but he may well turn out to be an excellent choice. I certainly hope he does well and I have no reason to think that he won't.

I wonder if Gareth tells the story of when he was trying to watch a Stoke game and this bloke kept trying to talk to him about squirrels?

"I was at the Newcastle Town game yesterday, and some pedantic old prick kept telling me not to drop my H's whilst I talked. The final straw was when he bollocked me for starting a sentence with a conjunction. I walked off in disgust, next time I saw him he was flicking through endless photos of Helvellyn at sunrise on his camera phone with some fella who looked like he wanted to kill himself"

Criticising an internal appointment, to a rapidly improving area of the club is a bit like saying Tom Edwards is shit because we didn’t buy him.

Got a lot of time for Gareth. I’ve met him a few times and always comes across quite well and happy to talk. It’s an interesting appointment he’s obviously worked his way up through the setup and will know it well.
Good luck to him I hope he does really well.

I wish the guy every success. One thing I'm confident is that he probably cares a lot more about our club than someone who only cares about his career path.

What a ridiculous statement. There is no reason why he can't be a big success. We should of all teams know throwing money at everything doesn't buy success. He's served his apprenticeship and hopefully we will reap the benefits with a local boy at the helm.

.... came across very well. Seems like the right man for the job. Read something about WBA Academy recently & this is obviously the correct policy to start recruitment locally initially

Whatever reservations people have about Jones, I don’t think anyone can doubt that he ‘gets it’. The need to create a culture throughout the whole club, get it working together and cohesively, laying foundations for the long term. Hopefully he manages to do it.
