Just sounds wrong really. The whole idea/appeal is the iron, Guinness shit's black and that.
Tried the Budvar Black lager. Similar thoughts about that too. A faddy fad, marketing nothingness.

You lot should all just forget all the outwardly macho stuff and get yourselves a wonderfully fragrant, refreshing, heavenly, ice-cold gin and tonic! In a tall glass, pref. cut crystal, with lemon slices and a ton of ice. Cheers!

It's a drink, much like many others. It's a nice drink. It's not the nicest, but it's alright. I will happily drink Guinness on occasions.

Guinness sminnish . It all tastes like dogs shit. π Itβs black lager. Never understood the hype. Donβt get me wrong, Iβd drink it if there was nothing elseβοΈ A good pint of Genius is the antithesis of lager. As I said above, Black Budvar is black lager. While the idea of 'you've never tasted G. Until you've been to Ire.' maybe a bit of hype it is true that a slow lovingly poured in stages and knifed glass of the dark stuff on green soil is something very special. Obviously far different to lager in the burning of the mash (hence the dark roasted colour). It used to be that even in the shittiest of establishments the Guinness could be relied on as a benchmark... and the places that took a bit of pride in it knocked it up a notch. Best local pint of G I've had was at The Red Bull in Kidsgrove... With the proliferation of citrus and fancy flavoured fruity bitters Guinness has once again become my go to brew... And now I hear they're mincing with that.. no ta. Quite enjoy a Black Velvet or an Irish Car Bomber.

Gin and slimline, 58 calories a glass. I don't give a shit what people think of me, I'll drink it, have done for years. They don't know what they're missing, Mets! Well there is that.... as much as I like lager and beer, G&ST is a very nice drink with a lot less of the guilt and can be improved with a quality gin. Nothing wrong with Bombay Sapphire and Tonic, but for example, my favourite last summer was Poetic License. They do a number of very high quality examples and while Β£30 a bottle may seem a lot, it all depends what your intentions are. If your plan is to actually enjoy the drink you consume, then a better gin can completely change the experience. Lager on the other hand, is just lager.... unless your chosen pub sells something like Peroni, you're drinking utter crap.

Now rum, that's a different matter altogether! That's fair enough, but while nobody sees an issue with rum and diet coke, or vodka and diet coke, gin and slimline is seen as a girly drink? I don't see why personally. Rum and Gin are usually the same ABV, so are equally as strong as each other. Gin and slimline is the 'healthiest' (i.e. lowest calories) of the drinks although it's considered neck and neck with vodka and diet coke. You also have to watch out for the fentimans slimline and other 'artisan' hipster tonics because they're not actually 'zero' calories. However if your local is selling Schweppes slimline, then I fail to see why it's not a perfectly reasonable option....? At the end of the day, I like beer. I also like lager. However, as someone who has lost weight and since developed a good level of fitness (comparative to other 28 year olds) and intend to stay in good health, it is very difficult to maintain a consistently good frame and fitness level if you knock back 10+ pints, every Saturday..... Remind me why they call it a beer gut? Most bodies are simply incapable of processing so many calories and not showing some kind of weight gain. The only exception is perhaps those who work physically demanding jobs during the week. I don't, I sit on my arse.... and trust me, I tried for months during my weight loss to somehow continue with lager and ciders. No amount of running in the evening and healthy meals seemed quite enough though and it got to a point where my weight loss effectively stopped. I subsequently swapped my away day carry bags from Dark Fruits/Lager to home mixed gin and slimline tonic..... with the inevitable jokes flying my way on every away trip. I would sub as many pints for g and ST during the day as well. There was an immediate and noticeable improvement in my weight loss, which was consistent week to week and I ended up reaching my target weight much quicker than I expected (which I remain at to this day). I also noticed that my weight loss only ever stalled whenever I had Saturdays consuming beer and lager. The reality is this.... a roundabout 10 pints (a fairly standard away day amount for most lads my age) is roughly 2000 calories.... and that's not decent premium ale, that's your crappy cheap shit: Fosters, Carling, 3.8% nonsense. You start drinking the premium ales like Heineken, Stella, Grolsch or Peroni and you're way over 2000 calories and nearer 2500. That's an utterly ludicrous amount in reality. Switch that with double gin and slimline and you're nearer 1000 calories. Singles and it's barely 600. No brainer.

You mention Bombay Sapphire, and I've got Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray in, and have had Gordons (I love the classic green bottle) in the past. To me the Tanqueray seems to have a very faint but lovely sort-of almost 'ginger' tang, but another reason for my buying Tanqueray (daft as it might sound) is the bottle, which is a gorgeous Art Deco type of design. There are two designs, and I'm referring to the 'less squat' one shown in the link below. But: taste-wise, folks might be a bit shocked to know that in view of the recent massive increase in gin's popularity there was one of those blind-tasting tests a year or two ago when gin started to come back into fashion. 'Experts' tested a wide range of gins, including a number of really expensive & top brands, and one brand that beat all the others hands down was the Tesco own brand. I'm not surprised, because it's very, very good indeed and IMO the experts got it absolutely right. I'm not at all tempted by any of the new flavoured gins, though - (eg. rhubarb, etc.) - not for me at all! www.31dover.com/spirits/tanqueray-10.html
