No matter whatever else Maradonna and Thierry Henry did or didn’t achieve in the beautiful game, for me and a lot of others no doubt, their careers will forever be tainted by their blatent, win at all costs cheating. The ‘the hand of god’ incident for me nullifies anything else Maradonna ever achieved. That’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it.

I say this as a proud Englishman but that 1986 England side wasn't fit to lace his boots let alone the rest of the Argentinian team. We lost to a far superior team. I got over it pretty quickly. Probably a lot of shit coming my way but that's the truth. If they were that good they shouldn't have had to cheat. Aye fair point, cant really argue with your logic. But the truth is they were superior, and as you correctly pointed out anyway with Maradona playing we had no chance. His second goal was the stuff of folklore. And watch how he leaves Peter Reid in the middle of the park wondering what the hell has just happened.

I’m aware of the genius of maradona but wasn’t around in his era just seen bits and I know football has changed over the years but surely messi needs to be held in greater esteem. Maybe when he is retired. Plus hand of god and all that Why would you say Messi "has" to be held in greater esteem? That hand ball goal... disgraceful

Like any self-respecting 80s kid I cling doggedly to the notion of Maradona as the greatest, much as those from the previous generation probably cling to Pele. But being totally honest and as objective as possible, I think Messi will probably go down as the best ever in years to come, and justifiably so.

Apparently this is the 10th season in a row that Messi has scored at least 40 goals.

Maradonas goalscoring record: 259 goals , 491 games Messis goalscoring record: 414 goals, 445 games.
That’s just wiki stats but with champions league I imagine the average is pretty similar. Messi is the best player we will ever see in our lifetime. People can compare what he hasn’t won with Argentina but it takes nothing away from the fact.

Messi's contribution for Argentina is ludicrously belittled. They were stumbling their way to Russia and Messi single handedly dragged them there.

Maradona, even at his very best, wasn’t fit to lace Messi’s boots. Not even close. That's going a bit far....Messi plays with world class players in every position...Maradona made a mediocre napoli side great, to say he wasn't fit to lace messi's bots is ridiculous.

Maradona stood out as head and shoulders above everyone in what you yourself described as a “mediocre” Napoli side. Messi has played alongside the very best players in the world, every week for the last 15 years or so, and has stood out head and shoulders above every single one of them. I’m not saying Maradona wasn’t a great player. He was one of the very best, but he wasn’t nearly as good as Messi IMO.

Messi has the quickest feet in the penalty area I have ever seen and his finishing is also the best I’ve seen, but Maradona (cheating slime ball) had a game and presence that inspired teammates and supporters to believe. His second goal v England was awesome, despite Reid running in quicksand 😳 Two greats with different games, but I’d rather Maradona in my team (if morals don’t count ..)..

Jimmy White is harshly remembered for never having won the world championship.
Ivan Lendl is harshly remembered for never having won Wimbledon.
Harsher than those two examples of harshness is Messi being remembered for never having won the World cup.

That goal was just embarassing. If that was football porn it was the equivalent of watching Boris Johnson throat-fuck Susan Boyle.
PS Messi is not even as good as Ronaldo...

I don’t think he will be to be honest, I think he’ll come to be widely accepted as the greatest ever (already is arguably)

Pele the best and Marradona a close second. Cristiano Ronaldo probably in third place.

And lets face it we are never going to see live TV footage outside of Messi's house where he is opening fire with his pellet gun at the local media. Its a generational thing I suppose but for me Maradona is the King. Er after Ricky of course!

The sun was in his eyes so his hand was up there protecting his vision, therefore accidental hand ball. Fair goal , nah he's a cheat but hey nobody is perfect

I think I may have to read his bio now. I saw a post about him winning Napoli the title after I put my post up. However I still say messi is the greatest 🤣 Its a great argument and you have a solid case. But for me its Diego. No one even mentions ( oops, didn’t read the second page before posting . )the truly greatest ever..... Pele He was so good they brought out a new law to stop him from being transferred!
