I don't have an agenda. I'm pointing out that both made choices based on the rules. As have many of McLean's English born team mates. That is all there is to it. And Rice actually is English. I just wish he'd keep his trap shut because all he's doing is giving people ammunition. Just to point out I wasn't saying you yourself had an agenda mate. Nothing wrong with a healthy debate. Fair enough. I'm generally on McLean's side and I think he should be free to wear what he likes and think what he likes. But he doesn't do himself any favours. Somebody should sit down with him and create an alternative scenario in which an English protestant joins Derry City and turns his back on the tricolour, quotes members of the Parachute Regiment and mouths off about the English born players who have played for Ireland, then moans endlessly about the treatment he gets from fans.

What came first though? A lot of the things he has been quoted as saying, the stuff that winds people up, have been said in response to the abuse in my opinion. He's a young man who has reacted. I agree with you that he has a right to wear what he does or doesn't want to. He made an eloquent and well reasoned statement at the time yet was he was vilified. I understand your frustration, I genuinely do. I do think the majority of it has been a reaction to immense provocation however. Edit: I'm also willing to admit, that in turning his back on the Union Jack, he was probably guilty of provocation himself there. Flags are a huge thing in the part of the world he comes from, there are so many connotations attached to British and Irish flags and symbols in Derry and throughout Ireland. I admit that was a bit unnecessary.

I can see McLean opening his own PR company when he retires
I can also see him being the most popular Old Boy at the SCOBA gatherings

It's obviously not a one way thing and I get that he should have had more support from the authorities. But quoting IRA members just makes things easier for those who have abused him. This latest comment will just add more fuel.

I do agree he would be well advised to avoid additional controversy. I just don't happen to find these Declan Rice comments particularly controversial.

As for the Bobby Sands thing, Cromwell was an MP and then Lord Protector. I don't think that would let our English player for Derry City off the hook if he went around quoting him at the fans in response to them giving him stick. What I'm trying to say is that McLean would be getting a lot less stick if he wasn't rising to it and generally proving himself to be as thick as a whale omelette.

This player constantly embarrasses each team he plays for by highlighting his beliefs and moans when people argue against it. He loves the attention it all brings , he probably thinks the Irish will worship him.

I'm not following why some people think he's inconsistent. James McClean clearly believes in a united Ireland, and when he got the opportunity to represent the Republic he took it. What other people do or don't do isn't really his problem. He was directly asked his opinion and gave it honestly. I don't detect any serious hostility towards Rice. The 'hypocrite because he plays in England' argument would only make sense if he didn't give his utmost for any of the clubs he represented-and I don't think any reasonable person would suggest that was the case.

The funniest thing about this tedious fuss over nothing is McCleanâs advice to other players in the same situation to "sod off and play for someone else" đ¤
âYeah, any of you fuckers that aspires to playing a better standard of international football with more chances of tournaments and better players, you can just bloody well just GO AND DO EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, yeah, thatâll show youâ

James McClean My hero.
Scores goals creates chance after chance for others.
Sublime passer on either foot.
Keeps his head down and gets on with it.
The best signing the club ever made.
Hope he does not leave for forest in the summer it woud be a catastophy.

I absolutely cannot wait for the day he leaves our club.
Tick Tock.

For your opinion to be consistent, when Mclean is asked what other players do, his response should be that it's up them. Same as it was with him. If Rice is eligible to play for Pitcairn, that should be his prerogative. Mclean's problem is clearly to do with the choice of England.

As an Irish Stokie I have a bit of time for James but there's no doubt his standard is decent championship. Declan Rice is the pantomime villain in Ireland at the moment so you can't go wrong having a pop at him On Rice the main reason we are pissed is because he is so good but now thst Glen Whelan has got his second wind Rice can f off.

Youâre not a Sentinel journalist are you?
The title of your post suggests you are anti the person in question. Although you âmayâ have a valid point why not post a more balanced title than try and be a sensationalist?

Please can we get rid of this hypocrite. For different reasons he is just a big a waster as berahino, imbula and Wimmer.
He has clear anti British views, everything he does or say is for his own interests to be seen as a republican hero of Derry sticking it to the Brits.
Quite how he has escaped sanction from the club for his comments after the Middlesboro game and purposely walking to the dugouts during the minutes silence I don't know.
Get rid he brings nothing but bad publicity to Stoke City. 6million and he is wank as we all knew. Working hard is no defence it should be the absolute minimum requirement of any professional.
Come on Martin O Neil do us a favour in the summer.

Perhaps âsomeâ wouldnât understand or relate to more the respectful posters That's a total nonsense I'm afraid, we're all here in our leisure time for a shared hobby, which is SCFC. Out of the thousands of posters there are a range of personalities and senses of humour. I'd hazard a guess that "bigmouth" wouldn't be seen as "derogatory" to anyone apart from those on the most extreme end of the sensitivity spectrum. Inflammatory language, hyperbole and provocation are a huge part of the appeal for a large number of people. It's not (necessarily) about being disrespectful for the sake of it, it's about welcoming the opportunity to be opinionated, escapism into a realm of pantomime, and above all, not taking one's posts too seriously.

If the shoe was on the other foot in some parallel universe where Ireland had a better football team than England and a lad has switched from England to Ireland then I bet most on this board would be fuming.
This thread is just another stick to McClean with.

Maclean hitting out at Declan Rice. linkHis statement makes no sense. He played for the N.I under 21's. So either he's a Hypocrite, or not too bright. Or both. Iâm not one to pile on, but there does appear to be an element of hypocrisy here. I wonder how McLeanâs opinion on Declan Rice square with the fact that he played for the ROI alongside our very own Jon Walters who is a born and bred scouser? I donât recall him commenting when players chose to play for ireland even when they werenât even born there. Just looking for a little consistency.
