I believe this question is second in the 'all time list of questions asked since the inception of the online oatcake' . This winner is of course 'What are you 5 favourite Oatcake fillings' GD

The first time I remember hearing Delilah was at Bolton in the early 80s when TJ climbed up one of the floodlights - why he chose to sing Delilah, however, is a bit of a mystery ?

Delilah is often also sung at Welsh Rugby and football International matches. Another question that follows is who sung it first. Us or them?
It was once suggested to me that we started to use the song during Mickey Thomas' first spell at Stoke in 82 when, after someone said do you know any Welsh Songs we can sing, the reply came, "well there's that Delilah by Tom Jones"

Maybe after singing Deilah we could the sing Toyahs it's a mystery. Then maybe we won't get the "when Delilah started" question asked again.

I always thought the story went: Stokies in an away pub, warned by landlord/police about songs containing bad language, decided to sing what ever came on jukebox next, on came Delilah, it stuck, they threw in "dick" just to pique the old bill, Anton Booth became TJ, and the rest is history! Well that's what I was told? (Whoops, just 'liked' my own post instead of the one below! How embarrassing )

i heard 2 myths as to why it was
one was that Tom Jones had played in stoke one night and it was sung in his honour
the other was that a bunch of lads were singing a ribald song in a boozer one day and a copper told them stop swearing, the next song on the jukebox was Delilah and the lads sang it and it went from there
who knows lets leave it as a myth

The first ever "Delilah" on the Boothen End was sung by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band when they played support to Yes at a concert at the Victoria Ground in the mid seventies (the stage was built into the Boothen End for the concert)
I understood that it was a mimicked rendition of this that started the adoption of the song by Stoke fans.
The first bit is fact though the second bit may well be bollocks.

I first heard it at Elland road think it was 86/87 we were losing 4-0 Thought it was gallows humour at the time due to the score line but it stuck
