They were out in force yesterday at Cheddleton station and at Consall Forge. I only saw the mob at Consall Forge but was told that Cheddleton station was heaving. Cameras, tripods, backpacks with flasks and sandwiches this hardy bunch knows how to come prepared
The reason....a rare Scottish visitor.
Star of the show will now be guest locomotive Caledonian Tank Engine No. 419 making its first visit South of the border since 1982 when the locomotive visited the Bluebell Steam Railway.
Built by the Caledonian Railway at St Rollox Works, Glasgow, in 1907 No 419 was designed by J.F.Mcintosh for branch line work and fast suburban duties before ending its working career banking passengers trains over Beattock Summit.
Saved by the Scottish Railway Preservation Society in 1964 the locomotive was restored to full working order in the autumn of 1971. Under the owner ship of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society No. 419 has ventured south a few times most notably for the Shildon 150 Cavalcade in 1975 and Rainhill Cavalcade in 1980. It was in 2009 the locomotive was last in operation and following an extensive 9 year overhaul the locomotive returned

Aren't trainspotters a thing of the past now? I blame their decline on easily available internet porn.

About the same length of time as a normal break, if there is such a thing. Apparently the new joint is fine and holding everything in place. A natural splint.

How long does the healing take for the more mature lad these days?

My favourite hobby as a young lad. Crewe was best place and we used to climb over the wall into the works yard, very exciting. Whitmore was also good because you would see engines that didn’t come through Stoke after electrification of the Crewe to Stafford loop line.

(Yeah, I know - it's a stupid question…… but you know what I mean….)

(Yeah, I know - it's a stupid question…… but you know what I mean….) It's exactly as the surgeon said at the Nuffield. The new hip is stronger than the surrounding bone. I'm ok but it's very painful, just have to wait for the bone around my new hip to heal, in a strange way it's acting like a splint. The bruising is impressive. What is worrying is that I was made redundant just over a week ago. Troubling times.

The last bone I broke was a finger playing hockey about 25years ago, I can't remember how long that took, few weeks maybe?. 🤔

However post the hip replacement I experienced intestinal bleeding which I thought was an ulcer from the 6 months of neproxen I’d been on. Turns out to be a malignant duodenal polyp that needs removing. Have been scanned to death over last 3 weeks just waiting for results and consultation for way ahead. NHS down here have been brilliant and my feet haven’t touched the ground since the initial diagnosis.

It's good that they've identified the polyp and are on the case with that. Good luck mate - as you say you never know what's round the corner do you.

Carstairs.... Bad memories of that station as travelling Crewe to Edinburgh on the overnight express required the train to split at Carstairs with half going to Glasgow and the other half to Edinburgh. As the train would be packed with matelots, including me, returning to Rosyth it meant we had to be on the correct section or we would end up in Glasgow. To ensure us matelots were awake at Carstairs the engine would give the train a jolt except once it didn’t and load of us ended up at Glasgow Central instead of Edinburgh Waverley.

In the late 60s before moving South my dad would take me to stoke station, we weren't spotting in the truest sense taking numbers and such but just to watch the high speed stuff hurtling down the main. Then when down south we were only a short distance from the East Coast Mainline and found a perfect spot to watch all the trains out of Kings cross. Not far from Hitchin and Biggleswade. Flying Scotsman, Mallard, brilliant sights.
