Saw an interesting discussion on BT Sport on YouTube and thought I'd share.
What are your thoughts?
I’m all for women as pundits, commentators and reporters in football but I personally think TV stations are now overcompensating slightly as there seems to be a wider 'push' for it. That, somewhat paradoxically, is in itself unequal and unfair (i.e. in order to redress some sort of balance you have to actively shift against a certain group to achieve it).
That said, it doesn't really matter to me whether they are a man or a woman.
I think there's far too many pundits in general anyway. Why you need more than 2 people in a studio discussing a game of football is beyond me. It's all hollow cliches and stuff that anyone in the pub could see most of the time.
1 commentator, 1 presenter and 1 pundit is enough. Football is on television far too much these days.

There is one who tries to sound like Jonathon Pearce, she does my head in.and they do seem to be adding more to the mix, no problem with it but I can't get used to it personally, even my Mrs says it doesn't sound right and it should be a bloke.

There is one who tries to sound like Jonathon Pearce, she does my head in.and they do seem to be adding more to the mix, no problem with it but I can't get used to it personally, even my Mrs says it doesn't sound right and it should be a bloke. The female commentator on BBC sounds atrocious. Almost trying to hard. |

I'm all for anyone who adds some insight or context to the broadcast. People like Gabby Logan and Ellie Oldroyd have been around for years and are established and highly professional presenters while ex female players like Alex Scott and Karen Carney seem to me equally as good as many of their male counterparts (and prefersble to a good few - yes you Danny Mills).
Nevertheless there is still a lot of both overt and casual sexism out there and as soon as there are some bad female appointments (and there will be) I've no doubt there will be plenty dying to point out that they're no good because they're a woman.

There are one or two who are okay, Jacqui Oatley is ok and also on The Darts on ITV. Eilidh Barbour is okay. Pundits in general whether men or women can be mundane and blithering. BBC stooped to a new low on Sunday with Clinton Morrison who basically struggles to string a sentence together. I'm not bothered whether it's a man, woman, white, black or sky blue pink but don't just foist people on us because they tick a few PC boxes. |

Pundits I can live with, Commentating is another thing. Their high pitched screaming when a goal goes in hurts my ears and makes me cringe.

It seems to me that there is a desire for women themselves to comment on the men’s game because it elevates their career based on viewer figures. At the same time the BBC/Sky/BT are pushing for female commentators to show a PC inclusivity.
I also notice how, whilst many men let our gender down with derogatory comments I don’t see even a fraction of women supporting women’s football. In a society with a 50/50 split why aren’t women’s games attracting 10,000s every week at the elite level? Granted they make a bit of an effort at Wembley but even then it’s hardly worth opening the stadium, in fact it probably loses money.
The women’s game is a generation behind in terms of support and quality. There is a real push to force it to become more popular and there is a strong suggestion that not taking an interest in women’s football is sexist or misogynistic.
Personally whilst it doesn’t appeal to me as I think the standard is incredibly poor, I’m all for women playing football and all the media that goes along with it, but until we have an even split in terms of wages and viewing platforms (I.e. prime time evening kick offs or early kick offs) then the TV companies really are just as skeptical and unsupportive as those people who openly oppose the notion of women’s football. But in reality it won’t happen because the standard is awful and it doesn’t bring in the revenue that the men’s game does, TV companies aren’t daft and they know this, even if they allow Jake Humphries to do his bit of virtue signalling.

Not for me especially when they spout all the same cliches as the blokes. It’s the same with women’s football, I quite enjoy it until the post match interviews. Pundits should be drawn from the support base of the matches being shown. Now that would boost viewing figures for sure.

Elidah Barbour is excellent + being absolutely gorgeous.
Alex Scott, again, knows her stuff, and is a stunner
Lynssey Hipgrave, cant stand her geordie accent, but highly bangable !!

Not for me personally. Bring back Barry Davies and Hugh Johns.....now that’s commentary that today’s lot could learn plenty from. They were comfortable saying nothing, but when they did it all added to the drama. Today’s generation just talk shite for the sake of it and treat the audience like they know nothing about the game.

I think it's great. Logan, Oatley, Oldroyd, Sparks, Scott, Eluko etc all good.
There's one who commentates who's name escapes me, a bit high pitched and monotone for my ear but nothing worse than Savage, Hoddle or Jamie 'Kings Speech' Carragher.

Genuinely couldn't give a fuck that she's a woman but Alex Scott is absolutely terrible.
Her punditry is nothing but hollow information and soundbites.
She's not the only one mind, the best is by FAR Gary Neville - but why Alex Scott is on every single time I turn on the TV, I'll never know.

If the male pundits were better, there may be some valid criticism. But Alex Scott is clearly a better pundit than some idiot like Danny Murphy muttering the sort of inane bullshit anybody could come out with.
So, I'm all for it. Although I'd like to see anybody who says about games that 'the women could teach the men a thing or two' attacked with a cattle prod live on air. Either that or set up the match to end the argument once and for all.

I agree Scott is a very good pundit and generally knows her stuff, but women commentators no no fucking no, false high pitched whining does nothing to enhance any kind of football

There were one or two commentators in the World Cup (the race between the BBC and ITV to see who could be the most diverse) that sounded fucking dreadful. Just shrill and whiny. Ended up muting the games. There's a lot to be said about weasel faced pundits like Murphy and Jenas that add fuck all to debate.

I think it's more just a case of a voice not fitting with regard to the "high pitch screeching", I personally cannot stand the style with which Jonathan Pearce commentates, but that's just because he's a bad commentator as it may be for this particular lady in question. (Not sure of her name)
There are several women commentators in Cricket who are just as good as the men, Alison Mitchell, Ebony Rainford Brent and Mel Jones all immediately spring to mind. I don't see why this can't be the case in football given some time and some opportunity.
As for punditry, I've never understood the problem. Alex Scott has shown on myriad occasions she knows more than enough about the game to stand up next to the usual suspects, so much so they are often "surprised" at her knowledge. Her handling of the Steve Bruce situation last month was a case in point. Whilst others were trying to case drama she calmly explained the many reasons why Bruce may need some time. At the World Cup, she showed up Henrik Larsson and Patrice Evra over their lack of knowledge regarding Costa Rica's setup, record and even players. Only to be patronised and "applauded" by Evra as if her lady brain was incapable of retaining such esoteric information. It was staggering.
I've never understood football's desperation for exclusive pundits who have played the game, virtually every other sport has pundits who have never played professionally, but have such a passion/knowledge/statistical experience for the sport they channel it to a brilliant viewing/listening experience adding to my enjoyment of the game. I'd rather listen to Tifo Football (excellent youtube channel, never played) discussing tactics and what not for 20 mins before a game then run through the same old cliches with the same old faces.

The commentary i have to turn off after a couple of minutes due to the pitch in their voices. The FA cup at the weekend had two female commentators doing the round up but it is hard to listen to. Sexism, i noticed now female sports football, cricket and rugby has to be in the same sports bulletins as top level mens game whilst lower level same sports are mentioned less and less due to the time given to the bulletins. Yes the womens games are improving but the coverage is too much for the level of interest. |

Though i have hardly heard any high pitched female presenters on the radio, but there are more high pitched male presenter on the radio to help the diversity quota. |
