Does anyone remember this run of results? 24 goals (including 3 hattricks) in 8 games. Great days.

The 2x games in 2x days still amazes me, players of old used to just get on with it, there would be uproar if they had to play on 26th & 27th Dec with this current crop.
Aside from the great wins v Leeds and Sheff Utd that Keith Bertschin hatrick v Reading really stands out for me, he really was on fire & a striker in form around this period.
Looking back Carl Saunders was on more of a red hot streak than I realised around this time also coz he his goals to game ratio wasn't prolific for Stoke but he sure performed around this winning spell!

Probably saw it through rose tinted specs as a young lad but I loved the Mick Mills era in the main. Unpredictable but certainly never dull and bags of goals. Not sure how a team could be so bad one week yet so good the next....

Nine goals in one month, pretty much. With our current lot those numbers are more like the other way round...

Confused. Sheff Utd 5-2 I remember as the second game I ever went to. Thought the first was Stoke 6 - Grimsby 0 in the cup replay just before. Was it the other way round then?

Had some good players in that side.

We wouldn't have even played any games in the FA Cup until January. The (second) replay you're talking about was 28th Jan '87

Keith Birtchin on fire, I remember he wanted burning. Bit harsh.. Bertschin was Leading scorer with 23 league and cup goals in the 85-86 season, that's pretty hot form by striker standards & winning player of the year in the process.. Remember his 19 goals in the league were only 2nd to Norwich's Kevin Drinkell that season. Not as prolific in the 86-87 season but still weighed in with a few..

Remember the Leeds game like it was yesterday, early kick off on a Sunday. 5-0 up at half time and the 2 they got should never have been allowed. Only 12,300 in the ground though, with a large contingent from Leeds. Aspin said they wouldn't concede 6 like they did the previous season

During the 5-1 win at home to Grimsby I was in the Butler Street paddock. Stoke were attacking the Boothen when Mick Mills who was playing that day shouted to Carl Saunders to'' get into his new position'' poor Carl looked like he didn't have a clue what his new position was.

That season was the best of times, and the worst of times. A scintillating middle third wedged in between two thirds of dross. A reasonable cup run aswell.
Strange how 32 years later it’s still looked on with such affection.

Call me perverse but I absolutely loved those times we were brilliant one week then fucking shocking the next you just never knew what Stoke was going to turn up, the away games our fans were immense not necessarily in terms of numbers but we were a proper Family back then everyone knew each and looked after one another and we needed to as well as Barnsley ,Bradford, Grimsby, Hull etc all glorious shitholes in their own right and would always see the whole town turn out against us some great times truly believed we would go up as champions by Xmas but we truly disappeared up Our own arses by March and ended abysmally lol

Ended with a 4-1 thrashing at West Brom and then pretty horrendous from there on in. Seem to recall a sunny day at Shrewsbury where we were 3 down I. 20 mins and lost 4-1..think Lee Dixon scored on own goal.
Still we ended the season in good fashion with the Grimsby win which promised more for the next season. Sadly, cup runs aside, 87/88 never seemed to get going

Leeds 7-2, the game that really got me hooked. Remember me Dad telling me not to get too excited afterward, "it won't be like that every week", cue the next home game.......

All unravelled after the 4-1 beating by a poor West Brom. Ron Saunders set up WBA to counter our wing and overlap play, and we struggled to get a foot in the game. I always said two strong signings may well have got us promoted that season. However, Gerry Daly and Howard Gayle who we did sign were perhaps not enough. We didn’t have a pot to piss in and Gerry and Howard came cheap. Incidentally, while losing 0-3 at home to Bradford in the pissing down rain, was the first time I recall Delilah being sung.
