7* We got done by a training ground routine. Otherwise they were no better or worse than we were. Our defence looks a bit improved, much less panic and more control. Less impressive was our attack, it just looked a bit anonymous. Edwards played some brilliant crosses in and we never looked like getting near a head on any of them. We made good opportunities at times and somehow never managed to to get a shot away. Frustrating, but there is some improvement. Improvement?

The players gave him everything, but not much quality on show.
Keep the faith.

It only seems about 150 years since we always beat West Brom... We were a bit better than last game, we're a bit more solid, we're a bit more creative but where's the drive, where's the penetration, where's the will to win?? And for all the small gains... just wtf is the point if we STILL don't have defensive routines strong enough to protect us against yet more unforced errors?? 5* add * if you were there please Not ONE on target shot by Stoke in a home match doesn't bode well does it ? WTF are they doing in training ? Not practising the art of goalscoring methinks.

Last week the back four were a complete mess. I actually saw some improvement from 3 of them BMI played better, Batth was my MOM and Edwards a close second.
Woods protected them in spells but wasn't as good as when he arrived. First game back since Brentford however.
Etebo was the best midfielder but he made enough errors. The most positive improvement was the rotation but that will take months to perfect properly. The Front line was pitiful, McLean can't play alongside Vokes he should abandon that asap. I'm sure he only picks him for attitude. Ince doesn't fit this system at all right now.
If Adam is fit next week he should play at least 60 mins. We need to try someone else alongside Vokes neither option fills me with confidence it's a coin toss.
6* for the general system improvement and better defending.

I'm not buying all this bollocks that all the players are shit.
We've got some good players but like other managers he's not getting the best out of them.
His formation doesn't suit the players at all. He found the right formation against Leeds then fucked it off.
352 all the way until he's got his players in the summer. No more McLean up top ever.

Zero goals in that line up
Predictable and random team selection
Zero stand out performances
No one playing for the club or manager
1 shot on target
Terrible substitutions
Zero tactics for a guy who'does his homework'
If there was a tactic, why do we keep crossing it against teams who know we are going to keep crossing it and we are crap at crossing?!??
Nothing to suggest moving forward
Another defeat, and at home
Zero effort or passion
Crap, false, joke of a post match interview
Did I miss anything?

Not all his fault of course.
But signing two of the slowest players in the league and not instilling any quick passing methodology onto the players already leaves me with a low score.

By our recent standards that was quite good - we were never going to score but didn't look like conceding every time the ball entered our half either.
Mind you if we're going by the standards of most teams in the division it's probably five out of a somewhat bigger number than ten.

3 +s More intensity Didn't get wallopped
-s Players are pulling out of tackles - which is motivation. One shot on target Clearly struggling with the system, esp Ince Shawx is many things. But he is a horse before he's a CF. Maclean as striker. "Ka?"
I really really want this guy to work and I want to defend him and I actually like him. But its tough when he makes a pigs ear out of a sows arse.

Hmm probably a 4* at best.
Can't help being very concerned that sticking so rigidly to this formation with our current squad could lead to the undertaker reaching for his varnish and bag of screws. It's going to need 2 or 3 more windows at least to get the players he needs. Hughes needed several windows to get players who would play his style of football, though we were already in the Premier League with a more benevolent tone filtering down from the top than is probably the case today.
I do feel for Nathan. If he had stayed at Luton he would almost certainly have been a Championship manager next season anyway and his stock and reputation would have exploded. As it is, his stock and reputation at Stoke is going nowhere any time soon.
Points from Wigan and Ipswich are far from guaranteed. I'm sure Nathan will be leading the prayers this morning.

5 defended better (except the goal), crap in last third. Strange Ryan sub. Think he’s just looking at all the players and assessing. To be fair, he’s had no pre- season. Will it get better? Not sure, hope so. Needs 12 months.

Not sure, hope so. Needs 12 months. Ryan is the new Crouch! He brought him on in the last few minutes as a target-man up-front. It was bizarre, I was only reading last week how years ago Fergusson once did the same thing with him at ManU and he found himself playing up-front with Rooney and Ronaldo.

0* Poor starting line up. Shawcross sub was batshit mental. 0 shots on goal. Long term I'm backing him to build something but short term he has to make some changes as it's clear as day that these entitled shithouses really don't have a clue how to play a diamond. Did jones say why he brought Shawcross on?? I watched in the pub and we all thought it was incredibly bizarre

4.
Maybe 5 at a push.
Despite having Clucas at LB & the Zzzz'ing for the goal, the back four looked generally better (in marking this game in isolation, you can't blame him for the lack of options at LB).
Midfield never really got a grip or got going. Woods was unconvincing and Ince, for me, flatters to deceive and I would have him behind Bodger in the 10 role anyway.
Up top? Blimey. Where do you start?
Answer: definitely not with McClean please.

Jones is playing an attacking line-up, which is what many, me included, have been wanting for the past couple of years, but his system is flawed. That's why it's not working.
We've won one game under Jones, and that's when we had 29% possession and were happy to sit back while Charlie pinged it all over the pitch to great effect.
If Charlie isn't fit then we need to play a 4-4-2.
So 7 for playing two strikers, minus 3 for imposing the diamond, minus 2 for allowing Woods to sit back for so long taking the easy options.
2*

Improved defensively, undone by a set piece by the best attack in the league.
Needs to bin McClean up front, IMO for Berahino.
Certainly better than the last 2 games.

I am one of the few who have called for us to play 3-5-2, and still think it suits our squad, but I thought we looked pretty solid yesterday, just really lacking up front. As you say, the McClean thing has to stop, and I don't even care who he puts with Vokes. You could make a case for any of our strikers. If we persist with the diamond, I would like to see Ince on the right of it, with Bojan at the tip.
