We have two genuinely gifted footballers in the senior squad, Adam and Bojan. (The only other footballing talent is Ince, but he is so one footed it limits his effectiveness, and he is not a team player, being lazy and wanting to hog the limelight.)
Regrettably both are slow and poor at defending, Charlie being a mobile red card and Bojan a feather duster.
Nevertheless until better players are available/proven we should build the team around these two talented players.
I would play Charlie in front of the back line, but because he is weak at defending, he needs someone athletic alongside him. That is not going to happen because it doesn't fit NJ's diamond strategy and we don't have anyone suitable to play alongside Charlie. The only player in recent years was Cameron, but he is now past it.
I would play Bojan alongside Vokes, in a "smash and grab" partnership. Unfortunately that is not going to happen as it is too old fashioned these days, like having wingers who centre the ball from the byline.
Sorry to show my age, but there you go.

What if we haven’t seen the 3-5-2 because Charlie’s been injured and without him to get the ball forward it is like parking a bus. Just a thought I had although I’m sure Jones is trying out his diamond. I just wondered whether he’s been reluctant to consider it because without Charlie it just wouldn’t work.

No one else pings a pass like Charlie. He plays the pass with pace which is a big positive.
The problem with Woods is his pass is slow and curvy, he bends the ball 10 yards back to arrive 5 yards in front.
If only more players passed as quick and decisive as Charlie it would drive us forward quicker and help eradicate the lack of genuine pace in the side.

Love Charlie. He reminds me of a "proper" 80's player

If someone had called for Charlie to be picked for the squad twelve or eighteen months ago .... It would have been carnage on here .... overweight, unfit, a liability, can't get rid of him .... It was claimed that his last red card resulted from him being airborne and going into a tackle recklessly. Lets take another look at his last red card. Charlie "airborne"? Really? It was in the snow - he left a very very wide skid mark in the snow - just goes to prove that he never actually took flight .... Great player is Charlie, I have never dissed him. He can, and often does change a match, the only problem being that he often doesn't have enough time to do it - those red cards just keep happening. I would have stuck with him eighteen months ago, no question at all.
It will be one of those mysteries that last for eternity why Charlie didn't tap in the rebound from that saved penalty. Maybe he knew that he was going to get clattered from behind - and would take the resulting penalty - we will never know ....
When we look at our present squad, all we see is a lack of footballing ability. That has been the case for a very long time now. Maybe the squad has become so shit that now people can see that as good or as bad as they may be, Charlie and Bojan at least look like footballers. You may like them, or not like them - they may be ineffective or not - but they do at least LOOK like footballers. The rest neither look like footballers, or are indeed footballers.
Batth and Voles (he he he) excepted, so far.

How come it has taken his managers 17 years to see that he does that? Because he has never, never been able to do it on a consistent basis. 17 years? Are you sure? I think his managers were very happy with his passing and creativity until he moved Liverpool in 2011. He was consistently successful until then. That was 7 years ago. In 2011 he was on the short list for PFA Player of the Year. His form was patchy at Liverpool but that was a big step up and he was only there for 1 season. It think it is generally considered that he was also doing consistently well at Stoke until his father committed suicide in 2012 and then was given 3 month compassionate leave. Even after that he had decent spells for us and played in the sides that finished 9th in the Prem. He lost his place to Bojan in 2015 and its only since then that his career has been patchy. To be honest I remember that differently. True he made a name of himself at Rangers and he was a superstar among pedestrians at Blackpool, but he has never really fitted in well here despite being here seven years. Pulis bought him but was never really able to find him a regular spot, not able to decide whether to play him as an attacking midfielder, which he is not, or as a central, which is more to his style, but we already had Whelan and then bought Nzonzi. He's played about 150 league games for us, many of which was as a substitute, and that's just over 20 games per season on average. Even when picked for the starters, he rarely was able to last 90 mins and not only because of his poor discipline. He may have had a really good game vs Leeds - but whether that was because he suddenly struck a rich vein or whether he was just fighting for a new contract remains to be seen.

Adams qualities have never been in doubt. It's his mobility, fitness and discipline. He needs to play because he is capable of becoming our talisman.

I think there’s a good chance we’ll lose at Wigan if Adam doesn’t play or he does play and Jones sticks with the diamond, or both.
