Tony We can’t ship anyone out unless there is a taker or we pay contracts up. It’s easy if contracts are only running until June, players like Berahino have got almost 3 years left (I think) Understand that. I found it surprising and curious that NJ was optimisic about making big changes in the summer when he talked. It made me wonder, well if you are so confident of getting players out in the summer, then why wouldn't you do more of that in January and have a longer run with a team you wanted? Before he said that, I was of the same mind - that it was practically impossible to shift most of the players we'd like to see gone. It’s much harder to do it in January though isn’t it?

If they've all had, say, 50% wage drops as was reported by Percy, do most of them look shiftable if we're prepared to take a (sometimes very big) hit on the fees?
Some of the bigger problems seem to be the Rowett mob (McClean, Clucas, Afobe), maybe Bauer (and obviously Berahino)?
Surely if Wimmer is now on 30k(ish) rather than double that, there'd be takers for £3-4m in Germany? Maybe the same for Imbula in Spain? And certainly Ndiaye.
2019 (Williams) Haugaard Adam Fletcher
2020 Federici Pieters Cameron Bojan Diouf
2021 Butland Shawcross Imbula
2022 Bauer Edwards BMI Souttar Tymon Wimmer McClean Ndiaye Allen Clucas Berahino Ince Vokes Batth Verlinden Ngoy
2023 Etebo Sorensen Woods? Afobe?

Not sure what happened with Bauer's new contract either?

I'd add Allen to that list as I do think a Prem team will still come in for him. Maybe Ince might move to another Champ club as well. Pieters if we get a good LB in, and will Cameron see a future under Jones?

Not sure what happened with Bauer's new contract either? Pretty sure Allen and Bauer are the only ones who had new deals post-relegation to effectively bump them back up to their Premier terms (laughable in the case of Bauer!) Don't think, in the end, there was any renegotiation with Shawcross (who signed his long-term deal in the summer of '17) and Butland. www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/stoke-city-jack-butland-contract-1750391Sentinel specifically referenced Butland's "eye-watering" wage drop.

I heard from a family friend of his he was on £60k a week still and it had been renegotiated but it could well have been nonsense!

Pieters if we get a good LB in, and will Cameron see a future under Jones? Yeah - I wouldn't include Allen in the hard-to-shift category because there'd definitely be takers for him. He's probably the easiest to shift player on the books? I don't think Ince would be easy to shift because he'll be on really top-end Championship money, but at least he's got a top Championship record to go with it, which would probably make him shiftable with a bit of financial jiggery-pokery (although he still may well come good in the No.10 role?) With only having one year left come the summer, I wouldn't worry too much about Pieters or Cameron.

Sure - going back to my original post, i was simply wondering whether we'd done all we could - appreciating fully what you say. Who knows whether there was ever any genuine opp to shift Maclean to Forest, or Beharinho to CP (still seems ludicriously far fetched), or Adam to Rangers, or Bauer to Wolves or WHU, or Bojan to the NLS etc. If there was, the inclination would surely have been to move them on as they don't appear to be part of NJ's plans - and better to have the squad place ready to move someone into, or better still, loan a player who'd be a candidate for the position next year. But I do get what you (and others) have said on this one. Even come summer, it going to be hard to shift players, just because of the economics.

The only one of those who definitively isn't part of Jones' plans, at least in the short term, is Berahino though? By choice or expedience? It makes very little difference at this stage doesn't it? The kind of root and branch change it looks like we need was never going to happen all at once mid-season. An element of make do and mend was inevitable.
