We haven't played with a back 4 all season? In fact we haven't played with a back 4 under O'Neil's leadership have we? Pickering made more assists than any defender in the football league last season including the premier league, and is continuing in the same vein this season. We would be bloody mental if we didn't go for him if we have the chance. He certainly has the potential to play at the highest level and I think we may struggle to match Crewes valuation of him due to ffp. Well they are in a much better position financially since one of their directors was paid off last year but I seriously doubt we'd have a problem getting him for a reasonable fee. www.cheshire-live.co.uk/sport/football/crewe-alex-director-charles-grant-17850114

Is this guy related to Ally who played 83 games for Stoke in the nineties? Doubt it Harry appears to be good at football

Really don't see left back as an urgent priority as we look to push for promotion. Defence isn't the problem. Its our utterly hapless ability to create chances, beat a man and score goals. Two quality wingers and a striker need to be the priority along with a box to box centre mid. Looking at the profile f linked players d see thus window as setting up for next year as much ad trying for a lady minute trolley dash for the top 6

That link refers to their new director ("Mr CHARLES GRANT") Charlie Grant to those of us old enough to remember him! I well remember his Stag "Do" in Blackpool! He says in that story that he isn't going to divulge what has happened within the boardroom at Gresty Road! Think that I must stick to that policy regarding that evening on the Fylde Coast!

I’m seeing a lot about Pickering in an attacking sense, but can anyone confirm that this lad can actually defend?
As in a back four. Getting clattered on the far post with crosses from the right. Physically can he stand up to the challenge?

Physically can he stand up to the challenge? Yeah he's a decent defender. Any league one player is a risk and I don't usually think it's a great idea but he's one I've seen a lot of and if anyone can make it he can and I'd say the same about their CDM Ryan Wintle, I'd sign both.

Listening to Artell on Radio Stoke, labelling the Cardiff bid for Ng as "disgusting"
"Between here and Mars away from being accepted"
"We've got no need to sell. We're in the best financial position we've been in for years"

We're in the best financial position we've been in for years" Ng is out of contract in the summer so I'm guessing the offer would have been peanuts. Totally different situation to Pickering. Crewe just don't reject bids approaching £1m.

Yeah - pretty much what Graham McGarry said Bit strange that nobody has taken the plunge already if he really is sitting there for around the £1m mark given the amount of plaudits he's getting as probably the foremost potential bargain lower-league full-back.

Yeah I'm not sure why there hasn't been firm offers before but like I said he wasn't their best player last season, Ng was much better imo and so was Wintle and maybe Lowery. I would imagine clubs were seeing how he coped playing at a higher level.

Can't believe that would be true to be honest!! Still, looking at the players we are linked with - Pickering would be a fantastic signing and could slot in with either the 3 at the back or in a back 4 (preferably) and Davis could be a battering ram - couldn't see him getting an awful lot of goals, but would bully defenders, act as that focal point we are so sorely missing at the moment which we can play off, providing service to the boys in behind, Powell, Jimmy and Matondo to work off. Also offers a mobile threat in the air, which we sorely lack.

We need to be more than just ‘interested’, just give Crewe what they want and get him signed this week.
The thought of playing a back three again is nauseating.

I watched the game on my tab whilst watching the Stoke game on TV (it was far more interesting) none of the goals were Pickering's fault. Crewe were 3-0 up, the tactics were the issue as they could have shut up shop instead of going for more. He had a good game.
