To be honest I think that's right. We'll be in a right mess if we bring more in without getting rid of others. And our squad SHOULD be able to perform at this level. If we have to wait until summer than so be it.

I think he has stated the obvious.
Saying our squad is too big is a bit like saying, Jennifer Aniston looks quite fit in the film, horrible bosses.
Very true but not much of a revelation.

Managers always say Jan is a tricky window and know better than anyone. If we don't trim it now will happen in the Summer. We have a tidy squad if used correctly, true we could improve in some areas but are teams above us with nowhere near the talent we have so no panic. Work in progress

Work in progress I think we could just about manage with what we have with the exception of having to bring in a CB. If we continue to go 352 we literally have no cover. One things for sure though if we don't try and improve the squad we'll just stay around mid table and we wont get into the playoffs. Lets not forget though the more business we do now the less we'll have to do in the summer.

Has this led to new faces coming in only once we have moved out so.e dead wood (a difficult task as discussed previously on other threads) Not really. I’m sure he said from the outset he’d be looking at a core squad of around 20 players. He needs to address the unbalanced nature of the squad. If he doesn’t make any signings this window because deals aren’t right then fair enough. Hopefully we can get by until the summer and try and make a decent set of changes. We need to get away from the scatter gun approach to transfers we’ve had for a number of years now.

The team manager does not set the transfer policy.
I expect it was made clear to NJ that Rowett had spent the budget including 2 January transfers, and that players had to be moved on before bringing in even more players.
NJ was simply quoting the "party line" I believe.

Maybe we have a manager who now knows who to pick, when to pick them and how to play them

It would be unexpected if we made the playoffs - and even more unexpected if we got promoted this season. If it happens, it happens but I won't expect it. What I hope will happen is that by the end of the summer we have sold, given away or paid off the dead wood and brought in a fewer number of quality players with good DNA. So next season I want to start off with a sensible sized squad with a younger average age than now but with a mix of youth and experience.
If we are (unexpectedly) in the Prem I want us to be competitive and play with a bit of flair - a bit like Waddo's teams of the early 70s. Those teams were great to watch and gave the fans their money's worth season after season with a mix of youth and experience, home grown and imported. If we are not in the Prem I want us to have a squad which can give us a Championship season to remember - ending in promotion and playing football which is just as full of skill as it is of character.
To be honest I'm not over worried which of the above options actually happens - so long as we come close to one of them, I'll be happy.

Policy schmolicy.....if we don't bring in as an absolute minimum a youger, more dynamic, athletic centre back in this window then the executive have failed us and the club.....yet again.

Absolutely not. He's right in saying we need to get rid of the dross and people just hanging around the place. Time to get rid and then bring in properly committed footballers!

Bar a CB I think he'll stick with the squad he's got anyway, before an overhaul in the summer.

We have a tidy squad if used correctly, true we could improve in some areas but are teams above us with nowhere near the talent we have so no panic. Work in progress It won't happen because you, or anyone else, say it will happen. We have, or so it appears, tried for a number of years to get rid of our many misfits, and we haven't had much success. The reasons are either the players are too unacttractive, the price is too high and we won't compromise because of our heavy "investment" in those players, or clubs are willing to buy, but can't afford the wages players have grown used to earning. On top of that we have definitely shot ourselves in the foot because we've fallen into the trap of renewing fringe players, who suddenly appeared to be doing well and then stop doing that once the renewal was complete. So we shot ourselves in the foot way before Jones had any chance of doing that. If he had known the club and its hangers on players a little better, with the power of appointment he might have insisted that the club's transfer team got rid of at least 10 players, so he could at least bring in five. But failure to do that will probably reduce his spending budget in the summer, when on top of that he could find himself having to make Imbula, Wimmer and Badou feel welcome and needed...
