I say without exaggeration that was the greatest Stoke team of my 55 yrs as a Stokie. From John Farmer to BJR every one of them fought for the club without exception.

Biggest mistake by Waddo was going for Shilton, Farmer was easily good enough. Should have signed a striker.

Biggest mistake by Waddo was going for Shilton, Farmer was easily good enough. Should have signed a striker. 100% in agreement. He was shafted twice by Waddo. Once when Banks was bought, which wasn’t a bad thing because in 1967 Farmer was still a raw keeper. He spent 5 years under Banksie and stepped up to the plate when Banks retired in 72-73. But for some bizarre reason two seasons later Waddo paid a record fee for for Shilton. In Denis Smiths auto biography he says that this was a big mistake.

Wonderful times. Remember singing my heart out on the train back to London. Was that the season we were top of the league at one stage, or the following one?

Biggest mistake by Waddo was going for Shilton, Farmer was easily good enough. Should have signed a striker. He was certainly good enough, however, that was never really the problem. The big problem was that he seemed to be very unlucky with injuries. When Banks was injured in 1969, he lasted about 20 minutes of the game at Everton before Denis ended up in goal and we had to go out and loan Harry Dowd until Banks was fit again. When Banksie had his car crash, John was injured at the time, which is why we ended up signing Mike McDonald. In 1973/74 he had 3 different injury absences from the team and he was only 27/28 when he was forced to retire due to a persistent thigh injury. I just don't think Waddo had the confidence that he would play 42 games a season on a regular basis. With hindsight I think we should have spent £40-£50k on the best understudy for Farmer we could find (someone who could have comfortably slotted in when John was injured) and £250-£300k on a striker.
