This post is based on Rowetts exit, because of all the reasons mentioned on this board already and rightly so. We need a manager who can take us forward not just tomorrow, but for at least the next 3 years as well. The first thing the new manager has to do is to read the squad and then pick the system he finds suitable. Hopefully he has also own ideas that will bring us in the top six this season. At the same time he has to reinstall selfconfidence in our players and put a smile in everyone connected to Stoke City. Our players must love to play football again, and please, bring in new players with pace in all positions. Get Bojan and Bauer back in for a start. So who fits the bill? Honestly i don't know, but i hope we will pick a manager with craft and a Liam Lawrence minded assistant to lift the mood among everyone. I just wish we had the people to do just that. My friends, i'm allowed to have one more

We have had 15 managers. And only two were able to smile Kamara and Boskamp. Any other suggestions? Maybe we should wait until Ole Gunnar Solskjær is available at the end of the season. However I must reflect that of our two smiling managers one was a disaster the other made me smile also.

Solskjaer? He can smile yes, but was a disaster at Cardiff, and i'm not convinced he's the man when things start to go wrong. Lets see after the Tottenham game.

Totally agree - but we need decisiveness too. Its just that we need to start with (a calmly considered) end in mind and work towards it. Whatever Rowett's end was, God only knows.
- Team on front foot with positive mentality - 4 players who can score 10+ goals and 4 who can create 10+ in a season - Main system: 4231 - Skill and some youth - Recognise that in coming 2-3 yrs, our wage bill will reduce by 30%/yr. So we need to be building the capability to scout L1 and overseas, and use the loan system.
Might as well start now. Sell: Allen, Diouf, Shawx = 25m Send back: Cuco Release: Adam, Crouch Send on loan: Tymon
Incoming: First team squad every week: Bauer and Edwards, Campbell Loan players with view to buy next yr: Mings Buy: Watkins/Robinson and Maja (Sunderland) = 15m
Team:- Butland Edwards Mings BMI Pieters Etobo Clucas Campbell Ince Watkins Maja Subs: Fed Williams, Bauer, Woods, Bera, Afobe, Maclean

The key phrase here is picking a formation and ergo a team that fits your squad.
Hughes did exactly that at the start and we were very good.
But a few off the cuff signings later and players are being shoe horned in.
He then goes 3 at the back without the players to do it.
Lambert comes in and steadies the ship some what. He picks the players to fit the formation but it's ultimately very defensive and there just wasn't enough quality up front.
Then comes Rowett. He has a set style/formation. He identifies the players required to fit this. But he doesn't quite get who he wants. He persists with his style/formation becoming ultra defensive as goals are leaked.
Any new manager needs to be flexible to what he has in front of him.
That in all honesty to me says 3 at the back but I aren't a professional football manager

He got Afobe, who he badly wanted. He got McClean who he badly wanted. Neither fit into the style of play he identified. It’s not clear how Ritchie, who he wanted but didn’t get, fits into that kind of 4-3-3 either.

My friends, i'm allowed to have one more So you want a manager who reads the squad and picks a suitable system - providing it includes Bojan and Bauer which would pretty much dictate the system. And here lies the problem - we have fans who only want a manager who picks their favourite players. If they don't do that they will be derided as "clueless" and hounded out of the club. All the best managers have an independent streak and a thick skin. They never - ever - listen to the opinions of the fans. Fans think they know everything about managing a football team but in reality know nothing - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. A manager who listens to the fans about team selection is an idiot and should never be employed by a club that actually wants to be successful. The best managers tend to be respected rather than liked. Rowett has a pig headed streak and isn't particularly likeable - which I find very reassuring. His problem is that he isn't winning games - which is the only reason he should be moved on. I would be terrified if we ended up with a likeable manager - especially one who actually listens to fans about team selection.

we need a manager people believe in. lou had steve foley who nobody seemed to like but he was in ever week. looking back you see why he was in a solid player like whelan who was similar. we critised the players but believed in the manager. we need to believe and see a plan and a path to move forward at the moment all i see is silence from the boardroom and crap on the pitch. at the moment i see no path to a brighter future and dont believe the manager or board

For me football is a team game, not bothered about star players just need a team that gels and works for each other. Any manager who can do that and have subs on the bench who fit in, will do for me.
Playing like that is a winning formula, don't need prima donna players or managers.
For the last few seasons at least we seem to have a bunch of players who have just met as they walked onto the pitch, no cohesion whatsoever.

We don't do forward..... Just sideways backwards sideways backwards! On the pitch and most of the time off it!

He'll pick his formation, buy players who he likes regardless of if they play in his formation or his style of play. When I used to play the old champ managers, used to sign likes of gazza, Scholes, Lampard, at the end of their careers just so I could say to my brother I've got such and such, regardless of if they could fit in with the way I played or even if they were any good.
