That wonderful strike from Andros Townsend combined with the bizarre almost silent reaction from the Etihad faithful yesterday got me thinking.
Have you ever broken into applause at the brilliance of a goal scored by the opposition - I've racked my brains and can vaguely remember doing it a couple of times but for the life of me can't remember the goals or games.

I seem to remember applauding a couple of opposition goals away at Bolton in the 1990s.

I may have slapped hands when Gareth Bale scored Spurs' 3rd against us at the Brit in his last(?) season in England. A hip height volley into the top corner if memory serves correctly.
EDIT: Here it is.

Many times. The last one I can think of was Gareth Bale's worldly at The Brit. If you watch some of the games from the 70s it was commonplace to see a wonder goal ( Greengoff at Brum) being applauded all around the ground

It wasn't his last season... I don't think 🤔, I think it was one of his first that he broke in to the spurs team. I was in an executive box for that game through work and it happened right in front of us.

Gerrard's goal in the 6-1 demolition. That was a pity clap mate. Just like applauding at your kids school play when the singing has been shall we say ‘less than in tune’....

I think it’s also to do with the pre segregation 1970s where you might want to show discreet appreciation whilst not antagonising the home support.

Not a chance of me ever doing something so sporting.
"What a goal" is just about my limit when it comes to praise of opposition.

Occasionally, yes.
I remember Thorney getting a very warm round of applause when he completed a hatrick against us for Cardiff.

Mehmet topal for Valencia was worth applauding. I couldn't help applauding that, that was also probably the best away team performance I've seen at the Brit.

Aguero's solo effort that saw him dispossessed in midfield, retrieve the ball, take it all the way down the wing, cut in and slotted it into the far corner. Outside of Ric's many solo efforts, was one of the best individual goals I've ever seen.

First season in PL we lost 5-0 at Old Trafford. Ronaldo scored an incredible free kick and I was right behind it so could see the movement.
I clapped as I was sat in with home fans, but it was a worldie and deserved applause IMO

Seeing Neil Harris managing Millwall yesterday reminded me of a goal he scored at the Brit back in 2000, cutting inside from the left wing and curling it into the far corner. That got a clap from the Boothen End (we won 3-2 in the last minute with a diving head from Iwelumo)

I remember Ryan Bennett's goal when we played Norwich City at home nearly 3 years ago now. Not only did I clap, I was jumping up and down like a looney tune on acid as well. It was an own goal. I think Cameron Jerome came on as a sub for them and got a nice welcome from us. He plays for Goztepe in Turkey now. Always liked him.

GD It’s a shame he didn’t have the class to not manufacture a move away whilst claiming how loyal to the club he was though....
