Mothers.
My mother always gets things slightly wrong. A few years ago I made her a wooden grotto for her statue of Mary. She’s gotten many compliments on it. My cousin recently saw it so he asked her if I’d mind making him one as well. He’s a priest...I have another cousin who is also a priest...my brother and I are about as far from being priests and practicing Catholics as one can get, so I guess balance among the broods had to be maintained for world peace. Anyway, back on track--my mother said “sure, he’d be glad to make you one.” Well, dear mother, “I need to know what the dimensions of the statue are so I can begin drawing something up for him.” She mailed me the dimensions in with this year's Christmas card—not dimensions of his statue, but of hers, along with some pictures of her statue and grotto...not emailed digital pictures, real ones with writing on the back. I love my mother, she’s 81 and I hope she lives another 81 years. I'm keeping the pictures.
Merry Christmas everyone.

Some years back my mother had a visit from a distant cousin who was researching the family tree. Intrigued I asked her where he lived but she couldn't remember and said he lived "off somewhere". The following visit she told me that she had remembered and it was Fenton, which I suppose technically although only 5/6 miles away is in another city

At first glance I thought it said 'a wooden ghetto' and I thought you must be another way-out left-wing Corbyn nutter. Sorry! You good with a hammer, then? Can you do me a couple more birdtables? They don't need to look religious, but if you could do a sort-of little manger-thingy in the middle with fairly steep sides on it I'll be able to put the live mealworms in it. Thx hon. xxx

Bless her, my mum's 84 and she has possibly the most encyclopedic knowledge of the potteries unlike any other. Almost down to every last cobble. Every Saturday she gets the Sentnull and heads straight to the 'Way we were' bit and reminisces fondly. My Dad who's 92 is the same, what they don't know between them isn't worth knowing.

Wonderful post, Chuff. I think the Sennell chap who writes about bygone times is called Mervyn Edwards??? I bet he'd love to have a lovely afternoon tea with your parents and a great chin-wag for a few hours. He'd probably end up having them on speed-dial for any time he wants to know anything!

Not a bad idea Murph although I suspect it would take more than a few hours!. He'd need to record all the info electronically or end up with severe writers cramp. Once Mum gets started she's difficult to stop. 🤔

Lost mum nearly 4 years ago now, often clashed at times but my god, she was a cracking mum, only now do I really appreciate the job she did raising me after the old man passed away when I was 13 (a nod to my dad too). Christ, do I miss her, definitely a struggle this time of year. Boys and girls, wrap your mums - and dads in cotton wool, do all you can to keep them out of hospital this winter because they're irreplaceable to a level you just couldn't imagine until they are no longer there.

Thx hon. xxx I'm currently finishing up a cherry and walnut burial urn for my uncle. He's not quite dead yet, but he requested I make him one when I last saw him back in August. Regarding birdtables, not sure what they are (similar to bird baths without water maybe?), but sure, just get the dimensions to my mother as I'm sure she'd be happy to go over the details with me.

Just had a Spinal Tap flashback, "There was a Stonehenge monument on stage, that was in danger of being trampled by a dwarf.."

Ohhhhhh……….. the penny has just dropped that you're in the USA rather than over here, correct? ( I didn't realise - sorry!) Are you a Stokie in exile or did our wonderful football club capture your heart???!!! PS: If your description of a birdtable is a guess, then it's a very accurate one!

My downfall was watching a PL match between Stoke and MC a few years ago where Diouf ran the whole length and scored, so I said, "well, might as well back a PL team and see what all the fuss is about with this here game of soccer (sic)." Stoke seemed as good as any at the time. I sure know how to pick 'em. No regrets.

Cup semi-final and the 6-1 victory over Liverpool at home? Two of our better games! I had a brilliant, BRILLIANT couple of weeks on my own in DC in May 2005 and totally fell in love with the place. I stayed in Arlington and took a cab into the heart of DC & back every day and made Union Station my base for all the sightseeing. I still have my very own taxi driver over there!

If we're talking about 'a very occasional small delight in a glass' I prefer a Russian influence - or - a hint of juniper - or - fragrant bitterish pinkish herby stuff - or - a revisit to the 1970s, with coke - or - a little French 'quelquechose' that starts with " Do 'ave a……" See - I'm easily pleased! Cheers!
