I've ordered a new PC, and it will have an unactivated copy of Windows 10 on it. The shop has advised me to pay the £119 because most people have problems with the cheap keys on eBay.
So what is The Oatcake's experience on cheapo activation keys?

It amazes me, the amount of PC deals I see (mainly online), that are advertised as some kind of ‘killer’ deal, but don’t include Windows. It like a car dealer selling a car, but excluding the keys.
I don’t get the mentality. OEM is the cheapest (legit by Microsoft standards) way to get an O/S.

If you are scrapping a win7 or win8 machine just use the key from that and install using the official win10 download. It'll accept the key as a completely free of additional charge valid licence for win10.
You *do* need to scrap the old device though to do this legitimately.

Just nab the product key from a formatted PC in the house if you have one. Otherwise use the CJS link posted above. May as well get Win 10 Pro for £2 extra.
This is for the PC for gaming, right RBO? Probably worth looking at the Humble Bundle and seeing what games pop up. You can usually get 3 or 4 games for a quid or so through that, and it goes to a good cause. Sins of a Solar Empire is free on Steam right now. And it might be worth getting Origin Access to gain access to just over 100 odd EA games like Battlefield 1, FIFA, C&C etc...

Microsoft's Game Pass is also coming to the PC (It already works with exclusives like Forza and Sea of Thieves) Origin Premiere for £15 a month includes access to everything including brand new games like Fifa 19 and Battlefield V. Epic have also launched their new storefront and are offering a new free game every two weeks on it. Subnautica is up now.

The PC is for son #2 and I used the sample PC spec you gave me as a benchmark. One Stop Computers did me a good deal, good enough for me to let them build it for me instead to building it myself. I don't plan on setting up a gaming subscription just yet. The two suggestions for using the CJS link is going to mean I go down that route, thanks.

Fair enough on the subscription side of things, avoid Origin Access for the moment then. And avoid Game Pass. Tbf, the humble bundle one is a one off payment, so 3 games are on for a quid as an example, pay the quid, no obligation to pay again. They won't pester you. I've heard good things about One Stop. Did they go Ryzen or Intel for the processor? Good thing about going to a builder as well is your right to demand a fix if something in the PC fails which is great.

OneStop is just down the road from me, haven't been in there for 20 odd years though. Last time I shopped there I was upgrading my TNT to a VooDoo3 so I could play Deus Ex smoothly.

The only upgrade I'd probably make in the future around 2020/21 is whacking another 4 to 8GB of ram in. In 2020 the Xbox One X will become the new baseline console that game developers will target, and that has 12GB ram, so having 12 to 16 in the PC around 20/21 should cover it for another console generation, 5 or 6 years, son should have some happy gaming with that.

The beauty of the VooDoo Glide Wrapper. Made Tomb Raider look great that. Shame the VooDoo 5 was a failure really, it was nVidia and ATI all the way from then on.
