I feel all this constant talk about the venues where musicians "learn their craft" is getting demeaning. While it's difficult, plenty of bands make an okay living without ever getting near arena level. The Sugarmill was my Wembley Stadium! Anyway, I saw Gallagher & Squire in Wolves the other night. The redone Halls is possible the most annoying gig venue I've visited, although the sound is good. Overall a half-decent gig - the album doesn't have enough quality songs, and Jumpin' Jack Flash was a boring end to the set - I could probably see that from any band doing rock covers down a local pub and it didn't sound anything special. Why not play the Squire/Gallagher co-written Seahorses track at least? That would've taken the gig up a level and not made me think perhaps I should've chosen Bill Ryder-Jones instead. I was massively excited a few days ago when I saw Rialto (who came around at the tailend of Britpop) had reformed and can't wait to see them (I've already missed two gigs). Would be good to see Rialto. Deserve a mention on the bands to not make it big thread

Isn't that exactly the point of the article, venues like the Sugarmill are closing down all over the country, meaning it's more and more difficult for bands to find somewhere to play?

Isn't that exactly the point of the article, venues like the Sugarmill are closing down all over the country, meaning it's more and more difficult for bands to find somewhere to play? The subheader refers to the venues as "the kind of venues where artists learn their craft" - it's generally more established bands with a regular fanbase that fill such venues out and keep the venues going that are still going. Not bands "learning their craft." To me it's an important point most journalists seem to be missing, potentially underselling the venues and the bands that play in them. Sometimes it's even like the journalists don't get that bands "learning their craft" have rehearsed for tens or hundreds of hours before even playing their first gig. Why? I haven't been yet and used to like it pre refurb. App-only data-required tickets on an awful app. You have to walk what seems a mile to get in the venue all around fenced off parts of the road, through bag checks, body checks, dog drug checks, metal detectors. Then Staff sending you to another staff (repeat process) who supposedly will know where your seat it but sends you to the wrong seat (which you find out halfway through the support set), with the seating areas being pitch black even before the support has come on. I've been three times since it reopened, and it seems to get worse each time.

Saw Bill Ryder Jones last night at the New Century, predictably brilliant. Definitely the happiest I've seen Bill, looks like the lad is in a great place at last. Was a bit surprised the new century put the seats out, much prefer standing myself but gig was good enough for it not to matter much in the end. Haven't been Wolves since the refurb so that's a bit disappointing to hear, got The The in September there.

I went to see Simple Mind's in Manchester last night. Even though I'm not really a Simple Minds fan, I thought I knew enough of their songs for it to be a great night but to be honest, I got very bored of it all and left before they came on for the encore. It started off amazing to be fair, with them starting with Waterfront and that big thumping bass echoing around the arena but it went quickly downhill for me.

Went to see Echo & The Bunnymen at Albert Hall in Manchester, last night.
Though not a 'fan' as such, I thought they were good, enjoyed it.

Stranglers in Wolves Civic on their 50th anniversary trek . JJ as cryogenic as ever, looked and sounded amazing and done as a 2-set show so 28 songs all in , some deep cuts and all eras covered.. sounded great too and a superb show, a few more shows still to come so we'll worth a watch
Next up it's the very excellent Shader (from Stoke) somewhere in Hanley on Good Friday

Was lucky enough to go see simple minds last weekend , still amazing. Jim still puts it about and Charlie sounds like the virtuoso he is . £8.50 a pint in the Ao arena for a pint of piss in a plastic beer ‘glass’ was a bit of a joke

I was not into them at all but the bass line to the Waterfront sounded immense when they opened with that

Went to see Liam Gallagher & John Squire at the Apollo in Manchester on Thursday.
I'm not having that album at all. My favourite part of the set it was John Squire extending every song out like he was still in the Stone Roses - loved them parts.
But my whole favourite part of the night was Andy Burnham & Angela Raynor sitting in the seats directly in front of my seats.
Andy Burnham brought his pissed up wife and very drunk office staff.
Party girl Angela Raynor ( i quite fancy her now I have seen her in the flesh) brought a personal security guard who was a spitting image of Daisy May Cooper and everytime someone got up to get past Angela to either go to the bar or the toilet, Angela personal security protected like ahe was going to shot or stabbed when most people did even though who she was

Saw simple minds on sunday in Nottingham. They still sounded as great as ever. Great show, and they played a few classics from the first few albums which was excellent. As mentioned Jim and Charlie still love their craft. And dont you forget about me had the crowd singing for almost 6 minutes which was amazing.
My only gripe was the venue. The steep angles of the seating made it feel like a trip to Rotherhams new stadium. Not ideal for old folk who struggled and for unfit folk like me who were blowing out of their arses.

….. Splendour cancelled this year. The usual “circumstances beyond our control”, “we are taking a year off”. I imagine the real reason is that ticket sales were so poor. I thought the lineup was bad last year, but even worse this year. Can’t see they can get it up and running again next year. So we may have been to the last one ever.

Sunn 0))) at the new century. Ludicrously loud, not really my scene at all drone metal but was worth it for the experience. Absolutely bone shaking and the combination of murderous volume, storms of dry ice and strobing made for a pretty hypnotic evening. Very well attended gig and christ them fellas can shift some merch, never seen stuff fly off the merch table like that.
Oneohtrix Point Never at the same venue next week.

Tips welcomed please, cheers You should be alright on Tesco. Failing that there's a big multi storey across from the Hilton which is across the road from The Underground. Hoping to go tonight, Shader are great, the new song is a belter. Love watching the drummer, he gives it everything!

Shader at Underground were very good but also slightly frustrating, great sound, good and loud but not massive stage presence and choice of songs a bit odd,to me omitted a couple of their absolute best songs and then for an encore did a bit of Oasis and one they'd played earlier on . That said, I look forward to seeing them again , shame crowd wasn't bigger last night , Hanley really is quiet of an evening isn't it. Not lived there for about 30 years clearly
