I would like one , but don't know if A it's a good idea B which breed to go for.
I met a Picardy Berger on Snowdon many years ago and thought that they were the breed for me. I went to see some pups/ a breeder a few weeks ago and I'm not so sure now.Excellent dogs/ very demanding compared to more placid breeds. My second choices are a Labrador or a Golden Retriever. My wife would prefer a cocker spaniel or border terrier.
Any advice please from dog lovers/ owners?

My boy is a truly superb German Shepherd because I am constantly in awe of --- and am totally devoted to --- this wonderful breed, but of those you mention I would definitely recommend a Labrador or Golden Retriever, because if you're not a dog owner of old (and long-term dog owners do tend to favour certain breeds) Labs/Golden Retrievers will be a very good choice, eg. a spaniel might well drive you nuts! Spaniels are my very dear friend's breed of choice, but I would never have one, for which my most sincere apologies to spaniel fans!

We haven't got a dog ourselves but our neighbour has a Patterdale Terrier. I don't know much about them but it's a lovely dog and seems easy to look after, not too lively or frenetic, and quite placid, but I'm not sure if that's a general trait of the breed.

A. yes, its a very good idea - assuming you have the time to dedicate to him/her.
B. I prefer smaller dogs (i've got a Mini Schnauzer) - I think you need to decide on the breed based on your lifestyle, space, willingness to exercise etc - do your research carefully.
You wont regret it mate.

Go for it mate. The Mrs twisted my arm 3 years ago to have a cockapoo. I look a right fairy walking her n the park but I absolutely love her. An absolute joy to live with, imagine having something in the house that loves you unconditionally. She even lies in the bathroom while I'm having a shit - real love! Worth having a look on here whichever breed you decide - dogtime.com/dog-breeds/cockapoo#/slide/1

Had my first spaniel ( springer ) 11 years ago Wouldn’t want to swop her for the world
But about the only time I’ve managed to get her to sit still. Was she posed for the photo in my avatar
They are a lovely dog but not suitable if you want to spend most of your time sitting by the fire
For a quieter life maybe a retired greyhond you can normally pick them up as 1 to 3 years old from you’re local greyhound retirement centre

We have a border collie who’s proved over the years to be a great mountain dog. He even led me off a mountain when I stupidly lost my bearings in a thick fog. Without him I’d have been in serious trouble that day. He’s getting on a bit now but in his youthful days had boundless energy and coped with 10-15 mile mountain walks with ease.
Very intelligent too so you need to keep them mentally stimulated aswell. He’s currently doing a crossword as his swift victory in today’s chess tournament left him with an hour or two to spare.

No, the thing with spaniels is that IMO they can be quite chewy/destructive for the first 18 months - as, TBF, can ALL dogs, but I think spaniels are for some reason even more so - and if this were the case with yourselves, should you go for a spaniel, I would hate you to think you'd chosen wrongly and have the experience put you off dogs for life, which would be absolutely tragic. Hope that explanation helps!

I had the privilege of bringing up two Cocker Spaniels from pups. My ex mother in law couldn't cope with them and as we'd had a Corgi (brilliant dog) as I was growing up I was used to them. They were brothers and occasionally had a scrap with each other when older but they were brilliant. Lab's have a tendency to eat your house when young but are the most affectionate animals going. When I was in the police I wanted to be a dog handler but it never happened unfortunately. Go for it. (Corgi).😉👍

My boy went to Swiss Finishing School (would you believe it, he actually had my old suite of rooms there) so is mega-suave, multi-lingual, and a Wine Connoisseur and Chess Grand Master. #SOPROUDOFMYLITTLEPOPPETXXX.

We've got two Miniature Dachshunds. One long haired and one wire haired and they are right up there with the best dogs I've ever owned. So many different traits ranging from stubbornness to barking mad but so much character it's untrue. The long haired is the loving lap dog and the wire is the scamp of the family, always getting into mischief.
Used to have a Staffy and I love them as well. They get a bad press due to some of the knobhead owners who see them as a status symbol, but they are cracking family pets when bought up properly.

My sister-in-law, who lives in a very posh part of Hampshire and is married to a High Court judge, said the Membership Committee of the local 'Opera For All' Club had a really nasty turn when she told them she wanted to get a cross between a Bulldog and a Shih Tzu.

Staffies are some of the finest dogs on earth - truly wonderful, and their loyalty is second to none. I also agree with every word of your last line. For my 9th birthday my grandfather bought me a Staffy puppy who was to become my constant companion all his life, which was until I was 24. Apart from when I was at school he never left my side and even all these years later it still breaks my heart that he couldn't live as long as humans do.

They do smell a bit though and eat anything.😂😂😂 Seconded got a labrador I also have a westie to keep him company, lab is super chilled walk him to the end of the road or for 10 miles and he is just happy to go out and will chill for hours then. Springers are great dogs had one when I was a kid and my brother has one now but you can walk them for hours and 20 minutes after getting home they are ready to go again...
