Dunno if anyone just watched this fantastic bit of crazy South American cup action.. I tuned in halfway through, Gremio were cruising, 1-0 up from the 1st leg away and now 1-0 up at home. From what I saw they were in total control, River couldn't lay a glove on them. But on 82 minutes River scored from a free kick and suddenly only needed one to go through on away goals, cue throwing men forward for frantic attacks.. on about 87 minutes a forward has a shot which ricochets off a Gremio defender point-blank and goes out for a corner... but what's this... the ref's looking at VAR (I didn't even know it was being used, took me ages to realise what was going on) and after a loooong delay gives a penno for handball Gremio players go berserk - literally none of the River team had even mildly appealed for a penalty - the ensuing kerfuffle involves a player despairingly hugging the ref a la Joselu and team officials conversing gravely with military police on the touchline. Penno is scored but the whole thing has taken so long there are FOURTEEN added minutes to play, which River just about ride out to get through to the final. Ref is escorted from the pitch under a little canopy of police riot shields. Incidentally the final seems likely to be a "clasico" against Boca Juniors (2-0 up from their 1st leg) which would be one of the biggest games in South American club football in decades. Be worth trying to catch

Be worth trying to catch A clasico final would be special mate. It won't happen though. Each World Cup I look for the possibility of Brazil v Argentina and I haven't had one since 1990. A River Boca final would be a decent substitute 😀

A River Boca final would be a decent substitute 😀 Boca going to Palmeiras 2-0 up tonight, we’ll see.... if they can grab an away goal they’re in business

Be worth trying to catch A potential Boca v RP final you say?, and there you have the reason for the strange penalty decision Stinks of sponsor involvement given the hype and viewiing figures that will go with it

I could see why the ref gave the pen to be honest, despite the fact nobody really saw it in the moment. Defender lunged across with his arm outstretched.
Anyway it’s done now, Boca saw off Palmeiras so it’s a Boca-River final over two legs. Huge.
