I think today tells us we are definitely not going up automatically, and unlikely to make the playoffs.
and now I'm really questioning the manager because I thought the tactics were really poor for a home game. I despaired at the team sheet because of having a lone striker at home. We should have gone for it, as it turns out they were average and there for the taking but we could not break them down.
Its easy to get a bit down when you lose, but I don't think this manager has much idea. It will all end in tears, bring this on sooner than later.

I'm intrigued.

Well its the statistics if you lose so many at home, you are not going to get promoted automatically, and we cant win away much, its not looking good, we needed a win today

Yet more fizzing arse gravy.
That was a decent performance against a team who’d picked up our blueprint from 10 years ago and they did it well. Hardly ‘there for the taking’.
We are getting better, looking more and more like a team and not the bunch of individuals we started the season as.
Play-offs are still very realistic.

We never were 48-52 points was our trajectory when we appointed Rowett as it was when we started , mis targeted and didn’t finish our summer business and more importantly when we paid lip service to lessons learned .

Decent performance my ass.
3 shots on target with the opposition, two banks of four and two lumbering battering rams up front included, having 6.

The worst team to be promoted last season, Villa, lost 11 matches. We have already lost 5 with over two thirds of the season still to go.
Barring a miracle we are not going up.

Sky Bet have us at 8/1 to go up. Incredible to think we were favourites at Evens only 13 matches ago. I guess very loosely 8/1 would equate to about a 1 in 2 chance of making the play-offs followed by a 1 in 4 chance should we get there. I suppose there might still be a tiny slice of automatic left somewhere in the equation. I must admit I share the OP's view that today was somehow the end of the line with regard to automatic. Not mathematically of course but realistically I mean. I feel totally deflated, I'm the world's most pessimistic person but I didn't see us losing today in a million years

Would you want to go up - even if we scraped it through the play offs - given the way we’re playing? Then get thraped for the whole of next season.

Meh, the chaos is fun too. Three things can happen:
1. We start dominating and get promoted. 2. We keep losing games, Rowett gets sacked and we get a shiny new manager. 3. We limp onward with mixed results and get mid table and regroup for next year with another years parachute payment.
None are horrible.

If you contemplate the state the club was in when the new regime picked it up then I think the only concern for any reasonable minded fan was that we could start to lay some foundations and not fall straight through which was what Sunderland did last year( losing 23 games in the process ) and as you say Villa also struggled. Our club was rotten to the core and in great danger of plummeting - We now have a team that can compete in a game of football and a bit of a team ethos and after last year we should not take that for granted. Still to early to tell, but we look like we can hold our own and a bit more in this division, which I would have taken at the start of the season. If we can stay mid-table by xmas and add a new back 5 (well at least some competition for places) in the window we can possibly push on into the top half and maybe more. We at least look like we are heading in the right direction and not regressing as we have done for quite a few seasons now
