Bet he misses that one on one with the keeper already on the floor Conversely I remember him converting a one on one with the keeper at Reading in that collectors item of a Stoke City event, an almost unheard of away win in the FA Cup!

Ive seen Basford a few times. They've been climbing through the lower division progressively. They have obviously got some decent financial backing for their level but Carruthers has done very well to manage all that well. He's got an excellent record and now they are 3rd in their division and got an eye on a place in the National League North which could potentially put them just 1 Division below Port Vale! He's been there for 6 years that's a long managerial stint for that level.

Would have thought 10 years ago that Port Vale would potentially be one division above a team managed by a former Stoke player?

I remember Ron Atkinson describing Carruthers as an explosion waiting to happen. Alas it never did "happen" lol.

He was still playing in 2013 for Basford (Player manager) at the age of 41!

If he could finish he'd have been worth 18 million.

Came on as a sub and scored in the infamous Gordon Cowans testimonial at Villa Park in which Nello played, didn't he?
Looked sharp and was hailed by their announcer as being one of their FA Youth Cup winning team. We thought we had a bit of a coup on our hands when we 'swooped' for him (© Teamtalk).
A world beating striker, apart from that vitally important last kick of the ball into the actual net.

There was one bloke who used to stand in front of me at the back left of the Boothen End, middle section.
Every week Carruthers would miss a one on one and every week this bloke would screech "Jesus F'ing Christ Carruthers, every b*****d week", whilst stumbling forward in rage and going on a mini crowd surf.
The linesman used to get similar treatment too with offsides.
There was also an incident in the 5-0 Luton win. He had 4-0 to Stoke and was leaping with joy, flashing his betting ticket until Gleghorn rammed in a last minute 5th. Scenes of jubilation in the Boothen dovetailed by one man kneeled down on his haunches with his head in his hands.
He was a character that one.

Big bad Johnny Gayle scored a long-ranger in that Luton game. He was fucking wank as well 😀

His best seasons for us:
1993-1994 44 apps 9 goals 1994-1995 42 apps 8 goals
Not a profilic scorer, but we have had worse.

I think we were still negotiating a tribunal fee with Villa at the time so it probably put the price up by another £100k!

Unfortunately his name would not fit into a decent chant, and so on the rare occasion he played well, the best we could come up with was a lacklustre 'Martin Carruthers'. ... didn't really inspire anyone
