Season 71-72 was epic on so many levels. 71 competitive games in 5 competitions...Div 1, FA Cup, League Cup, Texaco Cup and Anglo Italian Cup. 6 players appeared in 59 or more with Jackie Marsh playing 69 games. We played Man Utd no less than 7 times losing only once. Our biggest home attendance was 49,091 against Man Utd FA Cup quarter final replay and a total of over 130,000 people watched our 3 epic encounters with Man Utd in R4 of the League Cup. Of course we won the League Cup and got to FA Cup semis, but there was a price to be paid for such a hectic schedule because second half of the Div 1 campaign was a disaster with only 2 wins in the last 26 games. In fact it was only a good start to the season, 8 wins and 3 draws in first 16 games, that prevented almost certain relegation. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971–72_Stoke_City_F.C._season

1969 - 70 : I stand to be corrected, but if I remember correctly that season Stoke had 5 players who had scored over 100 goals, which was unique.
Amazingly Mahoney only played 2 league games. This was because Waddington bought Ritchie and Greenhoff and Dobing dropped back into MF.

Happened quite a lot in those days, there's another thread on the board right now with footage from three league games in four days in 1975.
Probably more notable is the fact we played Forest home and away in the first four fixtures...

Funny to see our attendance fluctuations , 11 k up To 37 k Astonishing isn't it. It was almost unheard of to have a season ticket in those days so folks would simply pick and choose, more often than not prioritising an FA Cup game over a humdrum league match.
