I've got a Smeg electric oven that's gone wrong after only 16 years. Seeing that I cannot afford to replace it, does anyone have any recommendations for how to get it fixed, assuming that people fix ovens these days. The problem is that when I switch the oven on, it trips the downstairs sockets. Now before someone suggests it, stop switching the oven is an answer to the problem that I've already discounted.

That's the problem with posh ovens, they don't last two minutes.
Should have bought a cheap one.

Try contacting these folks, Richie - I've posted their details on here twice before, in response to similar pleas, and I know they sorted the problems out for the persons who'd asked. They're a family-run business, exceptionally nice people, too, and Terry is absolutely BRILLIANT with all sorts of appliances - if your machine can be fixed I'm sure he'll know how to do it. Have a look at their website and the testimonials page - the comments from their customers don't surprise me at all - they are every bit as good as all the people say, and even better. They've helped me out twice with different things, and I can't praise them highly enough - if you get in touch with them I hope they'll be able to help you: The Appliance Group 170 Blurton Road Stoke on Trent ST3 2DG website: www.fixed4u.com/ Tel: 0800 528 5228 / S-o-T 593816 Email: enquiries@tag-direct.com

Smeg? Snigger. Sorry couldn't help it.
Sounds like a simple wiring fault. Could be the oven, your fuses/board or anywhere in between. Perhaps call out a qualified electrician. Maybe £50 call out to check first what's live that shouldn't be + then hopefully a simple fix. I'd guess there are oven engineers but you've got to think they'll be arm and a leg expensive.
Best not go poking around yourself if it's tripping your board, unless you really know what you're doing. A bang from the ring main isn't funny + ac can make your muscles spasm + cause you to grip harder.
Edit - if Murph personally recommends those people, go with that.

In my experience only three things within the oven can go wrong. The grill element, the heating element and the fan motor. The first two would`nt automaticaly trip your fuse, the fan would, but you would have noticed a burning smell if that had been a problem. I would turn off the leccy to your house using the main trip switch, and inspect the wiring inside the oven wall socket, then inspect the wiring leading into the rear of the cooker.
Also check the wall around the socket maybe it is damp, this can cause it to trip.

Could be Sharpy. Or maybe vibration from the fan/motor has worked a wiring connection loose over time. Or even mice chewing insulation, exposing a live wire + causing an unwanted earth. Shouldn't the oven be on a dedicated spur rather than the socket ring, anyway? Could depend on the oven peak power rating but doesn't sound right to me. Like I say, I know a bit but definitely no expert. I think RBO would be right to call out a professional on this. Good luck on it, RB. Hope it's a quick + cheap fix for you. P.S. good work Murph! The Oatcake - not just entertainment but helpful in your hour of need.

You're very welcome. I do hope they'll be able to help you (I say this in view of the oven's age) - as I said, they are marvellous, and seem too good to be true! I think we all unfortunately all too often these days get used to getting lousy service from people we have to call in to do any sort of job, whether decorating, building, plumbing, gardening - you name it - eg. a huge amount of the time they just don't even bother to turn up at all - or do a lousy job - or try to overcharge you etc. etc. - so when you meet a company like this and a tekky like Terry who is a genius, and SO PLEASANT and genuine, it comes as a huge shock to get such fantastic and amazingly efficient service! And after all that glowing recommendation I shan't know what to say if your oven is declared DOA!

(Gasp!) I have never, ever had a drink of beer! (And votch it, Wilhelm. I've clocked you up there with Chuff, who obviously likes livin' dangerously as he's already on a yellow card from yesterday.) However, you are correct in that I DO have a very large and ferocious dog and next time I'm out walking him and see you out doing the Roger Bannister stuff his lead might accidentally slip off….. and you will suddenly find yourself achieving a very fast speed……

No. Like most of these foreigners, it comes into our country, abuses the welfare system, refuses to learn English, and hangs around in groups of it’s own kind at the Potteries Shopping Centre.

I thought you did not believe it did 16 years, rather than being unhappy about how long it lasted. The original comment was tongue in cheek.
