Hardly capitalism, this has been going on for centuries momo In Brixton we have two large land owners. The Canes and the Bastards. I’ve named them because most people in the parish have admiration for what they have done for our community. The Bastards have owned land in Devon since William The Conqueror who sent his lieutenants scouring the country for land and William Bastard came here and took over land. His legacy is that land is provide at low rental to run businesses of all kinds, cottages and houses are rented at very affordable rates and they are happy to provide resources to run the village fete, Yealmpton Agricultural Show and many more events throughout the year. I know they make a decent living out of his ventures and some members of the community actually hate the family because of this. It’s weird. The Canes own smaller amounts of land but they provide employment, farming and also a composting Center where you can swap a bag of grass cuttings for a bag of composting mulch for free. They have also provided land for "affordable housing" in the village. Once again they make money out of these ventures and again there is a hatred towards them because of this. The irony is that those who despise them because of the money they make are happy to see there offspring able to buy a house in the village.
