Come on guys, lets' be balanced. He has been a legend and deserves respect. That doesn't mean that we don't need a new CB and havent for some time. Its not his fault that management has not done its job and recognised his falling standards and effectiveness and increasing liability. I think they did today

A legend for Stoke so I will never criticise him but maybe now is the time to try someone else at cb and bench ryan Only problem is I'm not too keen on Williams either

To be fair, neither centre back had a great game but the midfield 3 of the starting lineup offered zero protection. Leeds had a massive hole to exploit and exploit it they did!

Williams in, Shawcross out. Not only is his distribution terrible, but his positioning is atrocious too on today’s showing. If you are talking positioning the worst was Martins Indi.

Was told to stop talking shit after suggesting he would be finished as the out and out defender we knew him as before his back operation. He's an absolute liability.

Shawcross has been a great player for us but he is finished now. The whole defence needs changing far too slow and leaking too many goals again. Stoke need to address this situation otherwise it will be another long hard season

Cannot understand why we insist on channelling the ball out through Ryan so many times. He's soooooo slow, he frequently plays shortish passes that place our lads under immediate pressure or toe ends the ball up into fekkin no-man's land! Got a lot of respect for Ryan but it's based on historical performances now. He has at least to be replaced as the skipper and stop fekkin bally dancing around. Going to have to go on holiday soon to get a bit of bloody respite

the midfield coverage is to blame for the poor defending and scapegoating Ryan and Bruno is ridiculous when their goals come from the defence being pulled out of position from having to stop the player with the ball, the movement of the striker and cover midfield runners that our midfield didn't track back with. they can only do 2 of the 3 jobs so there is always gonna be a threat they cant defend.

Put Shawcross under pressure and he hoofs the ball forward to the opposition.
Tactics for playing against stoke. Works every time.

Thats why Williams has been loaned, because Shawcross is a liability, like it or lump it!

I know that everybody on here loves to have a pop at Ryan, but I'd give all of the back four a pass today - even Pieters and his weird offside trap. They received absolutely no protection from the midfield until Fletcher (Fletcher!) came on. How are you supposed to defend against eight attackers running at you when your own midfield is jogging about near the halfway line? When you look at the first goal, there's only Joe Allen anywhere near the play, and there are three or four players that are just left for Ryan to deal with.
We'd struggle with prime-age Baresi and Beckenbauer in the middle.

Nope look how far the centre backs were from each other for most of Leeds attacks. In a different postcode, no idea why but we looked a man short all game.

He really is poor now Shawcross. All good things come to an end, and this is it for him. He’s a club legend. But we need to move on. I don’t mean get rid, he will be big around the club still. But we need better now. He lacks mobility, his actual footballing ability has never been the best but has got worse hence the long ball every time which never hit the target. It’s been happening for a couple of seasons now as people are saying, I can’t remember the last time I saw him break out into a sprint. It’s hard to accept for himself and for the supporters, but he is finished

"It's a massive wake-up call after a tough, hard pre-season," defender Shawcross told BBC Radio Stoke. "We thought we were ready but we couldn't compete with their intensity or hard work.
"Leeds were the better team. It's disappointing, but it's only one game and there are lots of games ahead so although there will be a lot of negativity about this game, we are a positive camp.
"The manager (Gary Rowett) has pulled no punches and told us what he thought. We knew it was going to be a difficult season but that was the wake-up call some of us might have needed."
Think he's including himself there. Leeds played very well, especially in the first half, but Rowett now has some decisions to make about our more-esteemed players. Some of the ones considered our core still look shot from relegation.

Time to think about his place in the side? Stinking the place out with his attitude, body language and Neanderthal style of football. He's not the only one with a massive hangover still from last season but today, he epitmised everything that is wrong with us at the moment. I put a post on here the season before last about how awful shawcross is now, and I got slated for it, he's done alot for our club over the years, but his time is up now! Doesn't look to the side of him to play out, all he does is play a long ball forward (that comes to absolute nothing) as if pulis is still in charge! Williams has to start next Saturday instead of him!!! As for today, I think Ince looked decent, McClean will be a top player for us down that wing with good service! Think it's just players sussing eachother out first game, can't expect to gel straight away with new players brought in. It's a worrying start, but I'm pretty certain things will come good!!🤞 Bojan has to start! He made a difference when he came on, it wasn't much of a difference, but you could definitely see his class! Butland has to be careful, federici will be in soon with a few more Howlers like that, he cost us on the second and third (kicking out into touch with no pressure). Gooooo ooooon Stoke!!!!

I've always been a massive fan of Shawcross however today he looked a mile of the pace defensively and although he's never been particularly gifted on the ball, I don't think I've seen so many aimless punts upfield as I did today. We really missed a Whelan type figure dropping deep and picking the ball of the 2 CB's/GK.

Ryan’s distribution has always been poor, but it’s really accentuated by the fact that we are now in the championship and their defenders can actually pass a ball. Plus, Ryan keeps getting caught out of position. He was a legend, but we have to move with the times.
