My kids and their partners all had the AA, they all passed first time.
Do they still do the £1000 guaranteed pass thing? Anyway a monkey could drive these new cars you only have to steer.

My advice would be to try a few, I really didnt get on with my first driving instructor and it really didnt work. whereas my second was ace and I learned lots and quickly. So be aware of that when block buying, maybe just go with a trial lesson before booking. Also - give the theory practice book a religious read (keep it in the toilet so you have to read it when nature calls.)

Nah it's an absolute piece of piss which probably needs an hour of light scanning just before the theory test. At least that's what my lad was saying before he failed it by one mark putting his driving test back by a couple of months

I did mine with Up 2 Gear. I think it was 20 hours for £180. I had 2x 20h block bookings then it was £20 per lesson there after when booking singles.
I had no issues, they were all fine and dandy and I passed first time.
Definitely take 2 hours at a time, at least until you have the basics nailed down otherwise by the time you get comfortable in the car it's time to go home plus traffic and the limited distance you can travel (there and back) in an hour is limited.
The theory test is pretty easy if you use the apps available on the app store. One had the exact questions although I can't remember which one it was but they all are similar.

Definitely 2-hour lessons for the reasons tribe says. Sure you feel shattered after each one, but it's worth it.
I took a week off work & did 5 consecutive days of 2-hour lesson in the morning, 2-hour lesson in the afternoon. After that, just the occasional 1-hour lesson to keep my eye in, as it were, whilst waiting for the test date. Might be too intensive for some but it definitely worked for me, I sailed through the test.
Not a clue about the theory test, tbh. I had to do it, it was the very first week it became mandatory, but here's a question from it I remember clearly: "What do you do if you see a rider on a horse? a) drive past as quickly as possible b) sound your horn loudly to let him know you're there c) drive past slowly and quietly". I'm guessing they've got a little tougher since then ...

d) Tell them to find a field. 😉 e) Look as long as possible at the lady riders arse before overtaking safely. Thought the test must have got tougher. 5 options? Ok, e) for me then. Although having grown up around horsey people, I'm not sure it would be possible to pass a lady rider's arse safely on most country roads. Even a dual carriageway would be a tight squeeze.

On the subject of sexisum can you get on the thread? I'm no longer allowed to post on it. I was wondering if it was just me?

Those were the days nice Citroen AX first car, 1 litre! PMSL!

My first lesson was in a 1983 basic mini. Lasted a whole 11 minutes. 10 minutes of the instructor telling me how a car engine worked, clutch etc. 55 seconds of driving slowly in a straight line, up into 2nd gear, lovely, no crunching of gears. Up into 3rd, brake for a corner + then smash into a wall at 30mph. Being a lanky git I discovered on cornering that there was no way I could get at the brake pedal because my knees were jammed under the steering wheel.
Took the precaution of then learning to drive in the fields in my uncle's land rover. No problem getting my knees under the wheel in that. Then the intensive course - can't remember the car but first thing i did before driving it was check I could get at the brake pedal - & Bob's your aunty's live-in lover. Taking the test in Telford might have helped. No traffic lights. Many roundabouts but easy to.judge my speed on the approach so I could reach each one with an available gap so.i didnt have to come to a stop.
And the single best piece of advice my instructor gave me - book my test as the first one available on a Saturday morning. a) the roads would be quiet and b) the examiner would want to get back quickly for his bacon butty. He was spot on, my test lasted just 25 minutes.

Passed at the third attempt after four lessons. Then did a bit of skid pan training at Hendon with the Met. The bike test was a bit of a joke. Going round Croydon out of sight of the examiner on a Yamaha RD 250 until he stepped out into the road and put his hand up. Great fun.

Anyone remember the examiner called Dimsdale at Duke St test centre? Never passed anyone first time apparently. When he walked out with his clipboard and said my name I pretty much gave up there and then. After I completely bollocksed up the reversing around a corner bit, winding up about 4 feet from the kerb (he opened his door to check/take the piss) I thought any slight chance I had was definitely gone. Then at the end he asked me loads of Highway Code questions (everyone reckoned at the time that if you'd failed they only ask 3 at the most) some of which I got wrong. When he said he was going to pass me I was gobsmacked and could have happily kissed the ugly bugger

There's no chance in hell that I'd pass.

I took my test in 87 and failed, took it again 6 months later and failed, I got pissed off went off the idea...in 1996 i had the chance to buy a XR3I in White, I got a bargain tbf, and started driving it when i worked at Heathrow, met a Girl and was living the life as you do as kids, I had no insurance, no tax etc and but was milking it going down Ealing high street far too fast and a female copper held her hand out for me to stop...Idiot me i stopped...and got a fine etc and that was it..although i spent a night in the cells. 4 months later I went on a intensive course and passed...I learned my lesson...get a Sierra Cosworth next time.

I'm pretty sure that my driving lessons cost £1 12/6d per hour. He was a great teacher, he got me through my test first time. He's been dead a long time now though .....
His name was Mr Stacey - best driving teacher in Taunton, Somerset.

£210 is a pretty good price. My daughter's with this fella Kev from Newcastle. Pillar Driver Training Really put her at ease. Local and independent. Have a couple of lessons at night. Have a couple of lessons in the rain (if you can find any!) Have a couple of lessons in rush hour. Have a couple of lessons on the motorway so you can get up to 70, no use just tootling around at 29mph in the daylight all the time.
