The thing is a shop or pub or something gets closed down and is allowed to remain vacant and derelict. It looks vile and makes it a really unpleasant place to be. One thing I will say though is I've never felt unsafe in Hanley. It doesn't feel dangerous. Mind you I rarely went to the old bus station after dark. I've been Hanley loads of times in the last year or so and have yet to feel remotely unsafe there, mostly day time admittedly but I've visited the Vic and the Regent a few times in the evenings and managed to stay alive.

It isn't the Cotswolds or owt like that! But of all the flaws it has hazardous isn't one. There might be trouble sometimes but there is in every city.

We don't really need a new cinema and an M&S would leave a gaping hole down Parliament Row, but they need to do something down there because as the 'gateway' to the city it's an absolute eyesore. Ideally I'd like to see some bars/craft beer places because a night out in Hanley is just not a going concern right now. Admittedly Picadilly isn't too bad in the day with the designer shops, theatre and bars with outside seating but there's not enough there for a night out and Trinity Street can get fucked as far as I'm concerned. Picadilly is getting betting by the week it seems, the problem is it's about 200 yards long, once it's fully regenerated which i think it may well be soon enough, it's just not big enough an area to sustain a full day/night out. fuck knows what the answer is though, which is a massive massive shame,

Went up to Hanley last weekend for the first time in ages with living out of the area. I was really looking forward to having a wander around the Cultural Quarter as I'd heard it had a bit of a face lift over the past 6 months. I was slightly the wrong side of midday but it was fucking dead!
I'm at the age now where I'd rather go to a late night bar than the drivel that's served up around Walkabout but where the fuck is there in Hanley? Nobody has any foresight. Heard good things about this Slamwich Club place but nowhere else is trying to do anything different. I'd rather sit in a pub in Newcastle/Hartshill/Penkhull all night.

In fact Hanley is tame for it in comparison to other places.

Sadly out of town retail parks are killing high streets. You can effectively buy everything from 3 or 4 mainstream names and a supermarket on a retail park. Couple that with ridiculous rates for high street shops and add internet shopping and hey presto, no more high street. I look at the precinct in Longton and remember when it was a vibrant place, now it's just predominantly boarded up empty shops. Hard to see how it can be reversed. Add in the parking situation and it’s not hard to see why Hanley is dying on its arse.maybe if they flatten the old bus station and build quality apartments then people may want to live and work there..? Yes I suppose that's the best, Farmers markets are always very popular, they could maybe run something similar once a month, or do they do that local to Hanley anyway?

Slamwich Club, Mart's Brewhouse & Tap, BottleCraft, Klay, Bar 41, Peter's Tavern, The Quarter - none are exactly 'late night bars' but all are 'doing something different' and are exactly the kind of places that Stoke has been crying out for. I urge you to try each and every one out, you won't be disappointed. Hopefully, this little enclave of independent eateries and bars will be the catalyst for more of the same throughout the city centre (as opposed to bland chain places that are full of dickheads). Council might have to do something about the aggressive beggars/dust-heads/spice enthusiasts that blight everywhere north of JJB Sports before this can happen though.

Mart's Brewhouse is excellent- the problem is, Hanley needs more places like it because otherwise I'll keep frequenting Newcastle which has lots of places like Mart's.

A -Public Transport is bloody shit in Stoke. Do we have any late night buses?
If it's going to cost me between 10-15 quid to get home in a taxi I'll just stay in the local.
B - we need more shows on at the theatres to encourage folk to go out.
C - the smackheads put me off going to Hanley
D - street markets and farmers markets are a great idea
E - How good would something like Liverpool's concert square be? Good to sit outside in the sun and meet up with mates.

The other night I saw two security guards dragging a guy face down for 40 yards along the floor. Apparently the man is an alcoholic and drug addict, but he had crutches and wasn't being violent, so I venture to say the treatment was a bit heavy handed.

Getting somewhere after 6pm is like a military operation working out what connection is required and when can you get it etc. The crap public transport is a real pressing concern. It's an insult to all those who live in the area.

Last time I went to Hanley The Place was still open, then again the last time I caught a bus was 1975. They shut everything down that isn't antiseptic then wonder why it turns into a ghost town. Stoke is as bad and Longton is like a war zone. As an example Longton Town Hall had one of the best dance floors in the country only bettered by the one in the tower at Blackpool imo. In our day my mate TH used to have the place rocking, full of young people all having a great time with the town centre buzzing with the sound of Frankie Valli's "The Night" Is it even used now? Young people need things they enjoy not what mum and dad want them to have. www.youtube.com/results?search_query=frankie+valli+the+night+

And what if you weren't mobile for whatever reason. You'd pretty much be confined to home.

I've spent loads more time in Hanley than on other visits, and at various times of day and in various levels of sobriety . There is a conclusive hopelessness in a city centre contriving of boarded up shops fast food places poundshops and bookies. One point worth making though is SOT isn't the only place it's happened. The centres of plenty of other conurbations carry a similar bleakness to them. And, I hasten to add, for all the talk of ghettos squalor and ganglands, each time I visit it's the same as before only with fewer pubs and stores.

All overseen by a Labour controlled Council, local people have stopped going for many reasons one is that the place is full of non English speaking youths hanging around.

I’ve said before about all the double yellows in Hanley & the lack of singles, thus prohibiting the night time economy & Sunday trade. I was in ‘Castle yesterday for a wedding & this morning went into town to pick up some things(including 3doz ‘Castle Oatcakes)plenty of single lines to park on. Hanley needs to wise up...
