Yeah, again football is a bit more complicated than that. The chances you create come from things like the runs you make, the balance of the team, the threat posed by running at players and panicking defences. The team’s attacking threat withered on the vine when he went off. And no I don’t give a hairy fuck what a bunch of Sunday drivers clicked on the BBC website. The stick Sterling was getting well before the tournament shows there’s an in-built prejudice against him from some, his name is booed in pubs when the teams are shown. Anyone who voted him England’s worst player against Tunisia or Sweden knows fuck all about football and he wasn’t their worst player tonignt either. There you go again , not accepting the majority, calling people names because they think different than you. Those highlighted passages you posted are YOUR opinion and not FACT they are also a minority opinion and as such means nothing. You assume the reason people don't agree with you is because they are either thick or show prejudice. Does it ever enter your head that YOU might be wrong, or that it is YOU who hold prejudicial views about other people? Your cup is full, you have no room for anything else. When I watch a game like England Sweden and conclude that Sterling wasn’t the worst player on the pitch then no, it doesn’t remotely enter my head I might be wrong. Just because the majority think something doesn’t mean they’re right or know what they’re talking about. If someone wants to put a persuasive, intelligent argument forward to change my mind I’m well up for that. If the level of argument is ‘he didn’t score so he’s shit lol’ then I’ll stick with my opinion I reckon.

I feel fucking sick.
Genuinely never felt more devastated after a football match than I have that one, I didn’t move for 15 minutes, out of sheer dejection.
I hope France absolutely humiliate these twats.

I know, kane playing alongside maguire practically! Such a shame 😥 So disappointed after a great first half.! Why couldn't we just come out the same? Most of them looked fucked to me. Young especially should have been subbed earlier.

At the end of the day the squad did as well as we could have expected which is not a phrase you can apply to many English squads over the years! Quite simply we don't have any players who are as good as Perisic or Modric and our primary deficiency was a lack of creativity and guile in central midfield. We surrendered the initiative in the 2nd half which was disappointing - if we couldn't game manage a half against a team of the quality Colombia then we certainly couldn't expect do it against Croatia. How we ended up with a back 5 and why Kane was SO deep I have no idea. Their weakness was their 2 centre backs and we stopped trying to exploit them. If we are to persist with 3 at the back we MUST have the confidence to keep the wing backs further up the pitch or we lose movement and mobility, support and become outnumbered in midfield. Hopefully Gareth has learned as much as the players from this experience.

I'd only just learned to put all the players names to their faces and what clubs they played for. Best world cup in years. Hope is more fun than expectation.

I don't want to dissect it too much because it really was an unexpected and enjoyable journey (but mainly because I'm still reeling from it this morning) but there were some apparent faults last night.
Southgate for all his upsides seemed to have his stock substitutions no matter what was happening on the pitch. There was no need to take Sterling or Henderson off in my opinion and, even if he did want to take them off, like-for-like changes weren't really what was needed. He's made some big, bold calls already but he really needed to change the formation or tactics last night.
Kane looked absolutely shot to bits and, although I know he's our talisman and captain, I'd have considered taking him off as he ended up contributing very, very little. I'd have been tempted to swap him for Welbeck as he offers more of a physical presence than the others but then offers pace as well.
Alli, Lingard and Sterling never REALLY worked all tournament. Lingard was the neatest and probably the best of them but Alli was never at it and Sterling did everything until it really mattered.
Overall, I think we took the lead too early if anything. The longer it stayed 1-0, the more we tried to protect it, the more we dropped and the more they pushed. That said, how do you manage a game of that magnitude when nobody is used to it?
I can't knock anything or anybody too much though. The major disappointment for me is that this really was our best shot at it. There's no way the likes of Brazil, Germany, Spain etc are going to be that poor again next time around. I know people have said it's a squad for the future but if you look at the 2014 squad, there's only 5 that were in this year's squad. Fair enough, there were some old players in Brazil 2014 but what I'm saying is, it's not a given that 2022's squad will resemble the squad of 2018. I would say Euro 2020 MUST be the year it clicks for us, or it never, ever will.

Our squad are too young. It's as simple as that. On the greatest nogger stage in the world the youngsters have done very well. People get on about other teams having had a bad tournament and they won't be so bad in the next world cup. Well, our lads will have matured into proper men by that time, so they'll have a head start on those teams that have to rebuild. We've started on that journey with these lads and if we add in the brilliant crop of younger players coming through... the future is bright. In four years time we will have a mixture of old heads and youth, which is the perfect blend for success. I also trust Southgate to carry on as manager. England have to become like a club... it takes a few years and continuity to succeed. In the past we've had old has-been managers picking old has-been players and that has now stopped.
I'm as disappointed as anyone that our journey has ended, but for the first time in a long time I've become an England fan again. I've enjoyed almost everything and this world cup has been a great spectacle. When was the last time we could say that?
OS.

Yes - and no penalty miss nonsense to hang round some poor sods neck like an albatross for the rest of their days........here's to the Euros in 2020 - Southgate needs to build on the restored pride of both playing for the country and in the support base......two critical things that have been missing for nearly 3 decades in my book...

I enjoyed the world cup run but be basically we scraped a win against a poor team, stuffed another poor team, our reserves lost to a very good teams reserves, beat an ok team on penalties, beat an ok team and lost to a good team, we will probably lose to a very good team in the 3/4 place play off.
After all that I still have no real idea if we are any good or will go onto do something but unlike most of the last 30 years I will actually watch us try with genuine interest.

So basically England beat three teams of part timers and Sweden, who are championship standard at best..... Panama can be described as that. Harsh on Tunisia and just bullshit re Colombia. I take it back, we didn't even beat Colombia

For me anyone who doesn't think England gave it their best , is either sad or has never played
The lads , played as a team , played for each other , nobody ducked out of a header , nobody Dodged a 50/ 50 challenge
Every one gave their best , and we were just a tiny fraction short
It was a great effort
And we ever so nearly , won it
